Navan is seeking an experienced Tax Consultant to help scale and shape the future of our Travel and Expense product lines. This senior-level role blends deep indirect tax expertise with client-facing responsibilities and strategic cross-functional influence. You will partner closely with Sales, Product, Finance, Support, Operations, and the C-Suite to ensure exceptional client experiences while driving business growth.
As a key advisor to our Account Managers, you’ll leverage your background in VAT, indirect tax, and accounting to support strategic accounts, guide clients through complex compliance requirements, and shape our expanding Travel Payments and Expense offerings. This is a foundational opportunity to help build and elevate a new tax-focused function within a global, fast-growing SaaS company.
What you’ll do
- Act as the subject-matter expert on VAT, indirect tax, and e-invoicing for our customers after go-live.
- Lead indirect tax and VAT compliance strategy, providing hands-on support for VAT invoice retrieval, AP workflows, reporting, and export processes
- Develop, implement, and refine tax strategies that support business goals across multiple markets
- Partner with Account Managers to handle escalated finance and tax-related questions (VAT invoices, e-invoices, compliance workflows).
- Translate complex tax regulations into clear customer guidance, ensuring correct use of supplier vs. agent invoices, compliance with local e-invoicing mandates, and VAT reclaim processes.
- Provide hands-on support with VAT invoice retrieval, AP workflows, reporting, and export processes to ensure compliance and efficiency.
- Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Product Marketing and Tax SMEs to raise, track, and resolve issues (e.g. missing VAT, invoice structure, country-specific compliance).
- Contribute to customer-facing documentation and internal knowledge bases to clarify how Navan invoices can be used for VAT reclaim across different markets.
- Lead training, collateral and office hours with AMs and Support teams to strengthen tax and invoicing expertise.
- Monitor regulatory developments (e.g. EU e-invoicing rollouts, Spain/Italy clearing requirements) and provide feedback to Product on compliance risks and customer needs.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior team members as the team grows
- Strengthen client relationships by offering strategic tax planning support and acting as a trusted advisor to senior finance leaders
What we’re looking for
- Proven track record managing complex tax issues and strategic client relationships
- 5 to 7 years of experience in indirect tax, VAT analysis, accounting, audit, or a related field (Big 4, VAT IT, Fintua, Taxback or similar).
- Strong grasp of VAT principles, invoice compliance, e-invoicing mandates, and cross-border tax complexities (e.g. disclosed agent models, country clearing systems).
- Analytical mindset, comfortable breaking down regulatory and technical issues into actionable solutions for clients.
- Ability to explain tax and ERP concepts clearly to both finance teams and non-experts; skilled at building trust with senior finance and tax stakeholders.
- Works seamlessly with Product, Engineering, AMs, and clients to drive outcomes.
- Detail-oriented, curious, and eager to grow into a trusted tax and technology advisor.
- Experience with e-invoicing implementations in Europe (Germany, France, Spain, Italy) - strong plus.
- Familiarity with lodge card programs (Airplus, Amex iBTA) and how they affect invoice issuance - preferable.
- Exposure to AP/AR workflows, tax reclaim processes, and expense reporting automation - preferable.
- Fluency in either German or French is highly preferred.
