Flourish was founded in 2017 with the goal of helping financial advisors to better secure the financial futures of their clients. We focus on independent Registered Investment Advisers (RIAs), delivering financial products that advisors can’t easily access today through beautiful, scalable, and easy-to-use technology.

Today, we work with over 700 RIAs that collectively represent more than $1.5T in assets under management across three products: Flourish Annuities, Flourish Cash, and Flourish Crypto. Headquartered in New York City, we are an independently operating, wholly owned subsidiary of MassMutual Life Insurance Company.

Read on if you are interested in joining a small, highly collaborative, rapidly growing startup—backed by the support and stability of a Fortune 500 company.

About You

You are detail oriented with focus on accuracy and integrity as you work with and present data. You have sound judgment in determining when to prioritize speed versus quality. You work hard to first understand the root problem that your customers are trying to solve when they ask for data or analysis and you have the experience and technical skills to devise effective, scalable solutions to meet their needs in a timely manner.

You strive for clarity and consistency in communicating with others, avoiding unnecessary jargon, acronyms, etc. You have the ability to develop expert-level knowledge in multiple areas of a business and to discuss these topics with other experts and non-experts alike. You are creative when it comes to thinking through data and apply advanced conceptual thinking and non-standard methodology where possible.

You are seeking a small, fast-moving, and high-performing team where you will have the opportunity to make a real impact on all parts of the business as it grows and evolves. You want to help build a company and work with like-minded people.

About the Role

Your work will provide a critical contribution by delivering reporting, analysis and insights derived from a variety of data sources to partners across the Flourish business. You will work in an agile manner to deliver meaningful value to your internal customers and be responsible for managing your own time and workstream. You will architect and develop ETL pipelines as well as analytics, insights and visualizations. You have a strong grasp of best practices for data warehousing and Business Intelligence without getting caught up with orthodoxy.

You thrive in a work environment that requires strong critical thinking skills and self-direction, as well as constant collaboration. You can give and receive thoughtful feedback, and are excited to start on the next iteration of your work. Your work will enable the Flourish team to monitor and measure the business and progress towards our goals.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Partner with all Flourish product development teams to ensure that data essential to measuring our business and product is captured effectively and efficiently.

  • Perform ad hoc research and analysis using data in both a warehouse database and in a BI tool
  • Write and maintain documentation covering the key areas that you work in
  • Teach technical and non-technical users how to work with various Flourish data resources
  • Work directly with internal customers across Flourish, taking ownership of determining root problems, devising solutions, and managing communications along the way
  • Work independently and collaboratively with the team on highly visible cross-divisional projects
  • Drive continuous improvement and efficiencies as related to our data warehouse and track effectiveness of our tools

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in science, technology, engineering or math or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years working in business intelligence, analytics, data engineering, data science or similar related technical work

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong skill with SQL (Postgres preferred)
  • Medium to Strong skill with Python and Python-related ecosystem for data engineering (e.g. Pandas, NumPy, etc.)
  • Experience working with BI visualization tools (e.g. Tableau)
  • General experience working with a major cloud provider (e.g. AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)
  • Ability to set and stick to deadlines, allowing for shifting priorities while engaged in concurrent workstreams
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, exercising ownership of projects from start to finish
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential
  • Strong presentation skills are essential, including: group speaking and data visualization
  • Proven history of assembling and presenting analysis to non-data specialist audiences
  • Experience building automated reports and analyses, from development to production
  • MS or PhD in Computer Science, Math, Physics or Engineering
  • Experience working on shared data pipelines from inception through to production
  • Experience working collaboratively with source code control (e.g. Github)
  • Experience working within a heavily regulated industry
  • Experience working in a startup, growth stage company, or similar environment

An Insider's view of Flourish

How would you describe the company’s work-life balance?

We are passionate about what we do, but we know how to turn-off at the end of the day. Having flexibility allows me to get my work done and pursue my career goals, while still prioritizing my personal needs. Join Flourish to work hard, build great relationships, learn, and be recognized for interests and achievements both in and out of the office.

Kristen

Risk, Audit & Controls Lead

How do you collaborate with other teams in the company?

We participate in daily stand-ups, sprint planning, testing sessions, and use tools to share test data, bug reports, test cases, and scripts with the rest of the team. We're in constant communication with the larger team to better understand the gap between what we're trying to do as a business and the value that we deliver to our customers.

Carlos

QA Lead

What makes someone successful on your team?

As engineers we think primarily in code, but being able to connect that code to the larger context and use it to guide our work makes us successful and impactful as individuals and also outperform as a team. Flourish engineers have a strong influence and critical role in creating the technology that will continue to push the business forward.

Andrew

VP, Engineering

What is your vision for the company?

We’ve built Flourish to quickly launch compliant fintech businesses. We will continue to help independent RIAs grow, serve their clients with innovative and valuable products, and compete with wirehouses and private banks. We are humble, hardworking and innovative — just like our clients.

Josh

CTO

What's something quirky about your company?

Flourishers are Foodies! All shapes and forms of food are on the Flourish table. And while gastronomy brings Flourish-folk together, it also provides for fun debate within the office. A canonical question to new recruits is “do you enjoy pineapple on pizza?” There is a ton of passion from either side!
