Position Overview

Stantec is seeking a Traffic Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team in New York, NY. In this role, you will contribute to creating vital connections for people and goods, utilizing various modes of transportation, including cars, automated and electric vehicles, buses, trains, planes, bicycles, and pedestrian pathways.

About the Role

We are seeking a Traffic Engineer with at least 5 years of experience to join our growing New York City traffic team. You will collaborate with more than 50 professionals nationwide in a flexible, accountable, and supportive environment. This hybrid role requires at least three days per week in the office to support collaboration and mentorship while providing remote-work flexibility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Technical lead for traffic engineering tasks such as data collection, traffic operations, safety, and planning analyses. Including traffic impact studies, crash analyses, speed studies, and macro-, meso-, and microsimulation modeling.
  • Plan and perform fieldwork and traffic data collection activities, assess data quality, and apply collected data to project analyses.
  • Lead a team of engineers to direct technical tasks, review work for quality, and provide guidance and mentorship to junior staff.
  • Identify technical constraints, assumptions, and key variables, and help develop practical approaches that address agency and community needs.
  • Prepare and present technical memoranda, reports, presentation materials, and recommendations to clients, agencies, stakeholders, and public audiences.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams to ensure technical work supports project goals and requirements. 
  • Bring curiosity, initiative, and enthusiasm to solve transportation challenges and help agencies address their most pressing needs.
QualificationsQualifications
  • B.S. or M.S in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Transportation Planning, Operations Research, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in traffic engineering.
  • Successful completion of the PE exam or an active PE license.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to explain technical findings to general audiences.
  • Knowledge of TPTE best practices and familiarity with applicable standards, codes, and requirements.
  • Familiarity with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) studies and guidelines is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of crash analysis and countermeasure selection methods.
  • Proficiency in traffic analysis tools, including VISSIM, Synchro, and HCS.
  • Experience analyzing large transportation datasets, such as StreetLight or Replica.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

The following qualifications are preferred but are not required for consideration.

Additional Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Civil or Transportation Engineering, with a focus on traffic engineering.
  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) and/or Road Safety Professional (RSP) certifications.
  • Technical leadership experience in traffic engineering projects in the Northeast.
  • Knowledge of NYSDOT and/or NYCDOT standards, codes, and requirements.

About the Team
Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.

Benefits Summary: Regular full-time and part-time employees (working at least 20 hours per week) have access to medical, dental, and vision plans, a wellness program, health saving accounts, flexible spending accounts, 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase program, life and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, short-term/long-term disability plans, emergency travel benefits, tuition reimbursement, professional membership fee coverage and paid family leave.
