At the FT, we aim for employees across all regions to have an equal voice and opportunity so that diverse perspectives are heard, recognized and valued. We believe that a supportive workplace is one where employees feel they can be themselves at work and have the flexibility they need to meet their personal needs.

The role

The Financial Times is seeking a reporter to cover Wall Street’s biggest market makers, exchanges and cryptocurrency groups. The trading and crypto correspondent will lead our coverage of one of the most dynamic and quickly growing areas in US finance. The role straddles corporate and markets reporting, so the ideal candidate will be as comfortable wading through balance sheets as unpicking the plumbing underlying the financial system. Source building will be a vital component of this role.

The remit will cover high-speed trading firms including Citadel Securities, Jane Street, and Susquehanna, as well as traditional exchanges operators such as InterContinental Exchange, Nasdaq and CME Group. It will also cover leading crypto trading platforms and government policy in tandem with the FT’s London-based digital markets correspondent.

The reporter will be expected to deliver news and agenda-setting scoops, interviews, as well as longer analytical stories and profiles that will appear across the FT’s suite of publications, including the Big Read and FT Magazine. Writing skills are a crucial part of this job, since the correspondent will need to break down complex industry jargon.

The US trading and crypto correspondent will sit within the New York-based US markets team.

Key responsibilities

  • Cover Wall Street trading titans including Citadel Securities, Jane Street, and Susquehanna, along with exchanges InterContinental Exchange, Nasdaq and CME Group
  • Work with London-based digital markets correspondent on covering crypto trading and be a team player across our coverage of Wall Street and Markets
  • Generate consistent stream of enterprise news and interviews
  • Write analytical pieces for outlets across the FInancial Times
  • Work closely with colleagues across the FT’s Wall Street and markets teams

Is this the role for you?

This position requires you to be comfortable with these essential skills:

  • Track record of generating scoops
  • Strategy for developing sources in an industry that is hard to penetrate
  • Ability to find original stories in public datasets
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to translate industry jargon into plain English
  • You will be required to work weekend shifts as part of the New York rota

Please submit your application by the end of the day, Thursday 24th April 2025.

Salary range

A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $115,000-$140,000 p.a. To ensure pay fairness, the successful candidate will be offered a salary within the estimated salary range based on a number of considerations including but not limited to: skill set; experience and training; certifications; and other business and organisational needs. The disclosed range estimate is for our NYC office and has not been adjusted for other locations. This position is represented by the News Guild.

The use of AI

Original reporting, great writing and intelligent commentary lie at the heart of FT journalism.  Our readers trust us to produce quality journalism that is accurate, fair and insightful. This is why FT editorial staff do not use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to write articles or create other reader-facing content. For specific and pre-approved cases, AI can be harnessed for certain tasks, such as assisting data research for investigations.

We expect applicants to the FT newsroom to refrain from using AI in their test submissions, and any written materials should be a genuine reflection of their own knowledge, skills and experiences. We encourage candidates only to employ AI as a tool to help with research and interview readiness for a role.

Candidates should be aware that the use of AI throughout the application process is monitored to ensure a fair and transparent hiring process for all.

What’s in it for you? Our benefits

Our benefits vary by location but we are committed to providing best-in-class perks across all our offices. These include generous annual leave, medical cover, inclusive parental leave packages, subsidised gym memberships and opportunities to give back to the community. Full details of our benefits are available here.

We’ve embraced a 50% hybrid working model (averaging two to three days onsite) that fosters trust and remote adaptability while encouraging in-person camaraderie and peer learning. Additionally, we are open to accommodating specific flexible working pattern requests for all roles where feasible.

Accessibility

We are a disability confident employer and Valuable 500 signatory.

Please let us know if you require any reasonable adjustments/personalisation as part of the application process or to enable you to attend an interview. If you would like to discuss your requirements or have any questions, email [email protected] and a member of our team will be happy to help.
