About Atlas Obscura

Atlas Obscura is a community platform for travelers looking to explore the world’s hidden wonders. Through our website, mobile app, books, podcasts and other channels, we celebrate the world's most curious places, extraordinary experiences, and passionate communities. We blend high-quality editorial content with public submissions to create a unique platform that we are building out to feature more planning, memory sharing, and real-time travel tools.

Role Overview

The Video Formats Lead owns video content end-to-end: from concept and format development through editing, publishing, reuse, and commercialization. This role develops organic social video franchises, builds a library of reusable video IP, and creates a clear menu of video products aligned to sales and branded content needs.

Core Responsibilities

Video Franchise & Format Development

  • Develop organic, platform-native video franchises designed to engage community and creators
  • Create repeatable formats that can run across social platforms and on-site surfaces.
  • Build a library of video IP, including series ready for sponsorship or brand integration.

End-to-End Video Production

  • Own video creation from concept through editing, finishing, and publishing.
  • Establish standards for pacing, tone, length, and reuse across platforms.
  • Ensure video output is consistent, high-quality, and aligned with editorial voice.
  • Serve as a video host and/or narrator as needed.

Publishing, Distribution & Reuse

  • Own publishing and distribution of video content across social platforms and relevant on-site surfaces.
  • Design videos for reuse, remixing, and adaptation across channels.
  • Track performance signals and iterate formats accordingly.

Video Revenue Alignment

  • Develop and maintain a clear video sales menu aligned to repeatable formats and IP.
  • Partner with Sales and Branded Content teams to align video output with revenue opportunities, engaging outside production resources when required
  • Ensure sponsored or branded video work fits within existing formats and capacity guardrails.
Qualifications
  • 2+ years of professional video editing experience, with strong social examples. Preferably experience working at a new-media or digital-first organization (not traditional broadcast).
  • Primary editing experience in YouTube and social video — podcasts, interviews, social shows or creator-led formats. High proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro or other editing software
  • Experience designing thumbnails and social assets using Photoshop and/or Illustrator.
  • Comfort managing YouTube Studio, metadata, titles, descriptions and thumbnails.
  • Experience with basic camera operation, framing, and audio capture, including filming on DSLR/mirrorless cameras or iPhones.
  • Familiarity with analytics tools (YouTube Analytics, Google Analytics, Sprout, etc.).
  • A collaborative approach to creation and an independent work ethic
  • Some exposure to AI tools is a plus.
What We Offer
  • Opportunity to shape the foundation of a platform in growth mode
  • A culture that values curiosity, quality and the craft of building delightful user experiences
  • Chance to work with a passionate team dedicated to celebrating the world's hidden wonders
  • Competitive salary of $90,000 commensurate with experience
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
