Build yourself a robot and 4 other techie things you can do in NYC this weekend

Take a Class at The Makery

The Makery has a ton of workshop classes that will get your techie juices flowing. This Sunday they’re holding a 3D modeling and 3D printing class that will take you through the basics of the technology. By the end of the workshop you’ll have designed a custom, 3D printed keychain. They also have classes that will teach you things like how to build a 3D printed nightlight, 3D modeling, toy hacking, etc. You’d be hard pressed to find a more entertaining way to spend your Sunday.

Build a Friendly Robot

Tinkersphere is one of those weird little stores you’d walk by without even noticing. Located off of 5th Street in the East Village, Tinkersphere is packed to the brim with all the components you need to build your own robot. It’s not cheap, but it’s also not that expensive. If you are daunted by the prospect of building a robot from scratch, there are kits for beginners and children for sale as well. Seriously though, how cool is it to live in a city with a robot store?

Shop Online, Offline

Not only do we have robot stores in New York, we also have a bunch of physical representations of online stores. There are at least six e-commerce giants that operate brick-and-mortar stores in New York. Online retailers hawking everything from clothing to mattresses to fitness equipment have their flagship brick-and-mortars in New York. It's kind of an odd experience to be inside Warby Parker.

Dress Like a Model

Acustom Apparel will scan your body using the same sort of technology the TSA uses to make sure you don’t have a bomb stuffed into your underwear. After they scan you, they take a digital likeness of you and make custom designed clothing for your specific body. Once you go digital-custom, you’ll never go back to off-the-rack. That said, you may go broke.

Explore the Virtual World

Want to get a first hand look at what reality is going to look like in the year 2020? The HTC Vive is on display at the Microsoft Store in Midtown. It's one of the few locations in the entire country where you can check out the Vive's take on virtual reality without actually buying one. I got a sneak peak a couple months ago, and it changed my world.
