Congress slated to vote on net neutrality repeal

Today, the Federal Communications Commission will vote on whether or not to repeal net neutrality regulations. It seems likely that the vote will pass, as FCC Chairman Ajit Pai has expressed overwhelming enthusiasm for net neutrality’s repeal. Still, individuals and tech companies alike (including many here in New York City) are aggressively campaigning to uphold current regulations, and for the Senate to establish new legislation that would protect the internet in the long-term. NYC will develop task for to determine fairness of algorithms

New York City might soon be monitoring algorithms for 'fairness'

The Big Apple’s city council has just approved a bill that would require all algorithms used by city agencies to be examined by a specialized task force, and assessed for fairness. The task force will have 18 months to compile and analyze this data, before offering up solutions on how the city can improve its public-facing technology. The bill is likely to pass, as it simply requires a signature from Mayor de Blasio to go into effect. [TechCrunch]

Cornell inaugurates its new Tata Innovation Center and celebrates a $50M investment

The futuristic facility was made possible by a generous $50 million donation from Tata Consultancy Services, an NYC-based IT firm. [Built In NYC]

In the world of political ads, this software can help separate fact from fiction

Marketing firm DeepIntent is launching a new feature that will affect all political ads displayed on its platforms — which notably include Fox News and The New York Times. DeepIntent’s “Verified Ads” strategy will analyze all political ads and allows readers to view the source of that ad. What’s more, those who are submitting ads will be vetted and must prove their identity for the ad to run. The firm hopes that introducing this level of transparency will prevent the spread of misinformation, particularly during emotionally-fueled election seasons. [Press Release]
