It’s official: NYC has been selected for Amazon’s highly anticipated HQ2 — kind of.

After long debate and numerous bids, the e-commerce giant decided on not one, but two locations for its second home: Long Island City and Arlington, Virginia. Fortunately, New Yorkers are good at sharing.

“This is a giant step on our path to building an economy in NYC that leaves no one behind. We are thrilled that Amazon has selected NYC for its new headquarters,” NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement. “New Yorkers will get tens of thousands of new, good-paying jobs, and Amazon will get the best talent anywhere in the world.”

New Yorkers will get tens of thousands of new, good-paying jobs, and Amazon will get the best talent anywhere in the world.”

Amazon is investing $2.5 billion in NYC and plans to provide the community with a new tech startup incubator, a public school and some additional green spaces in the nearby neighborhood — not a bad deal for LIC residents, who are currently surrounded by a bunch of high rise apartment buildings.

The LIC location will occupy 4 million square feet and create 25,000 new open jobs in tech. But no need to tighten up your resume just yet — the company isn’t hiring for the new location until 2019.

Built In NYC began reporting on this back in 2017 when the company first announced its plan to open another headquarters. Not long after the announcement, it launched an 855,000-square-foot fulfillment center in Staten Island, partnered with locally-based Olo and opened an enormous office in Hudson Yards.

The signs were there all along: Amazon has always belonged in NYC, and now it’s finally happening.
