Thanks to modern tech, more devices than ever can now connect to the internet. Smart thermostats? Check. Internet-connected toothbrushes? You got it. Wi-Fi-enabled toilets? Unfortunately, yes.

But the Internet-of-Things revolution has a dangerous side effect. As more devices can connect to the internet, we put ourselves at greater risk for cyber attacks. IoT vulnerabilities have allowed hackers to take over everything from security cameras to baby monitors, cardiac devices and cars. Smart fridges have been used to set up botnet attacks, and connected dolls have been used to spy on kids.

While other cybersecurity companies work to ensure that networks and computers are safe, Firedome secures IoT devices. The company designs cybersecurity solutions for IoT device manufacturers to prevent, detect and react to vulnerabilities and threats. On Wednesday, Firedome announced that it raised a $10 million Series A funding round to fuel its business.

Firedome says that many IoT devices are “secure by design” — which involves building IoT devices on a secure foundation. Although this is an industry standard, it doesn’t fully account for the ever-evolving landscape that is cybersecurity. What is secure today might become vulnerable tomorrow. So Firedome designed a “real-time” endpoint security solution that is much less static.

“Firedome developed an innovative dynamic cybersecurity solution that combines the capabilities of endpoint detection and response, and next-generation antivirus, provides full detection, prevention and response, and is tailor-made for IoT devices and device manufacturers,” Firedome co-founder and COO Sharon Mirsky told Built In.

She continued: “With [Firedome’s] lightweight software agent, AI cloud, security operation center and threat hunting service, IoT companies can rest assured that they are proactively protected against any type of attack that is known today or will be discovered tomorrow.”

While Firedome’s initial focus was smart home devices, the response to its cybersecurity solutions has been strong. Firedome is planning to use the new funding to expand into new IoT verticals, like industrial and enterprise IoT connected devices.
