In 2023, go-to-market teams at four NYC companies are diligently working to make ambitious visions a reality and achieve far-ranging goals — and they’re looking for new members to join their teams.

Their missions are divergent — eliminating the complexities of the healthcare industry by shifting the power to patients, strengthening partnerships with brands and content creators, and honing strategic efforts amid economic uncertainty — but are all guided and advanced by supportive, tight-knit team cultures.

Amid the backdrop of a constantly shifting industry and economic landscape, these cultures serve as a dependable force and provide an environment in which colleagues’ unique strengths can be fully harnessed and developed.

“Tech is an ever-changing industry, and my team feels very rock solid. We are open to sharing ideas and more than happy to help each other,” Templafy’s Sales Development Representative Teyonna Johnson said. “There have been a lot of changes in the last few months, and it’s only brought the whole team closer. My team has been a constant, and I’m so grateful for that.”

Professionals at Zocdoc, Templafy, HiBob and GrapevineAI shared what their go-to-market teams are focused on in 2023, which skills and traits successful candidates possess and how they define their underlying team culture.

Madeline Evans
Sales Development Representative • Zocdoc

Healthtech company Zocdoc allows patients to locate local providers efficiently and book appointments online.

What’s one character trait or skill set that a successful candidate should have to land a spot on your team?

A combination of being assertive, amiable and collaborative positions people for success on our team. These effective written and verbal communication skills are an important aspect of Zocdoc’s sales team.

What’s the biggest priority for your go-to-market teams in 2023, and why is it important for Zocdoc’s success as a whole?

Our company’s vision is to unify the complex, fragmented healthcare industry — giving patients around the country one place to see, compare and book the care they need. To achieve this, our go-to-market teams are focused on a couple of things this year. Firstly, we’re delivering even more value to our existing providers by giving them additional tools and services that help them stand out to patients they can treat. Secondly, we’re continuing to add more providers and care types to our marketplace, which improves healthcare access by giving patients lots of high-quality options from which to choose.

How would you describe your team culture in a single word, and why would you choose that word?

Zocdoc’s sales team culture can be easily defined as collaborative. You will often find yourself receiving or providing feedback. This helps further develop your skills and ensure the most effective use of time and processes. Although much of the day-to-day work is autonomous, continual improvement requires input from team members with different types and depths of experience.

What’s one character trait or skill set that a successful candidate should have to land a spot on your team?

The one skill that is necessary for a successful candidate is curiosity. Sales is a tough job, and you need to stay curious when doing discovery. You must constantly find new ways to reach out to people. Staying curious keeps the job exciting.

For example, on a cold call, it can be easy to just have a set of questions that you need to ask the prospect, but the conversation will be much more fruitful if you really listen to the information that is being given to you and ask deeper, more meaningful questions.

Overall, if you move through each step of the process with curiosity, clients will feel that you’re engaged and truly interested in what they have to say.

What’s the biggest priority for your go-to-market teams in 2023, and why is it important for Templafy’s success as a whole?

Our biggest priority this year is being strategic with our clients. We want to ensure that everyone is comfortable within their segments and can easily speak within their industries. This is important because clients want to know that you understand their problems. They really don’t care that we can solve everyone’s problems. They want to know that we can solve theirs.

The past few months haven’t been easy for any company, so we have to be more intentional than ever.

How would you describe your team culture in a single word, and why would you choose that word?

I’d describe my team as steadfast. Tech is an ever-changing industry, and my team feels very rock solid. We are open to sharing ideas and are more than happy to help each other. There have been a lot of changes in the last few months, and it’s only brought the whole team closer.

My team has been a constant, and I’m so grateful for that.

Paul Zeiter
Chief Revenue Officer • HiBob

HR tech company HiBob provides mid-sized businesses with a platform to connect, engage, develop and retain talent.

What’s one character trait or skill set that a successful candidate should have to land a spot on your team?

Driven to succeed. You must have that inner drive, a foundational trait that can not be coached or trained. Success is not specifically about delivering a level of revenue; it is about succeeding in being curious and wanting to continuously learn and hone your craft of being the best seller.

What’s the biggest priority for your go-to-market teams in 2023, and why is it important for HiBob’s success as a whole?

Our priorities are adjusting to the new macroeconomic climate, honing the team’s selling skills to be value sellers and understanding how to navigate the more challenging times ahead.

How would you describe your team culture in a single word, and why would you choose that word?

Village. We strongly believe that our success as a sales organization is highly dependent on the entire organization — aka our village — coming together and working in harmony to deliver an amazing experience to our prospects and customers.

What’s one character trait or skill set that a successful candidate should have to land a spot on your team?

On the brand success team at GrapevineAI, successful candidates have strong soft skills. Essential soft skills include clear spoken and written communication, a self-motivated work ethic, the ability to multitask and an entrepreneurial spirit. What’s the biggest priority for your go-to-market teams in 2023, and why is it important for GrapevineAI’s success as a whole?

Our biggest priority for 2023 is investing in and building strong relationships with current and future clients as we guide them from project ideation to completion and continued success. The success of our business as a whole relies heavily on the success of our partners, which is why we work so hard to provide the best experience and execution possible. An investment in our partners is an investment in ourselves, so we continually learn and develop the best growth marketing practices.

How would you describe your team culture in a single word, and why would you choose that word?

Playful. If we’re not happy and having fun — and learning — while doing our work and building our product, we don’t want to do it. Even though about one-third of the greater GrapevineAI team is remote, we’ve still been able to foster a playful company culture and strong relationships through daily check-in meetings, companywide off-sites and teamwide bonding events. Our playful nature also contributes to the growth mindset that we instill in our employees. We encounter every setback and loss as a learning opportunity, encouraging our employees to “fail forward” and laugh it off.
