“MSK is committed to cultivating an inclusive work environment,” Ward said. Not only is the organization a member of the OneTen coalition, which aims to increase the share of Black talent at top institutions, but it also focuses on internal career mobility in an effort to build more diverse leadership pipelines. Ward added that employee resource groups, such as LGBTQ+ Pride, enable workers to foster inclusion themselves.

Cancer knows no bounds, which is why Hiamang said it only makes sense that a team of diverse individuals would spearhead the fight against it. In his mind, working alongside others to help treat, research, and cure cancer creates a culture of belonging that fuels progress and discovery. Hiamang added that a focus on open discussion and establishing metrics to measure companywide growth helps further nurture diversity.

Given the mix of people I work with each day, it’s clear to me that diversity has been a focus of MSK for a long time.

Opportunities for impact

According to Waters, MSKCC makes it easy to get involved both within the organization and outside of it. While employee resource groups have enabled her to take part in webinars and networking events, other initiatives have given her the chance to spark change in the local community. “I am proud to work at an institution like MSKCC, which has demonstrated its commitment to equity and inclusion at every level,” Waters said.
