This team, called Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners, seeks to bring together world-leading partners to focus on catalyzing technology-enabled infrastructure. Emerging technologies such as autonomous vehicles, distributed renewable energy, real-time controls, robotics, and machine learning are poised to both disrupt and enable infrastructure. Historically, infrastructure as an asset class has been resistant to innovation, resulting in many traditional infrastructure investors mispricing the risks of technology disruption and failing to capitalize on new infrastructure opportunities enabled by technology. As a software engineer, you will work across the organization and use technology to inform our decisions and bring this vision to life. We must create innovative products that will push the boundaries of traditional thinking in urban environments while protecting user privacy and security. This will involve solving complex computational problems, dealing with messy sources of data, and building systems which scale. Our software engineers are utility players who will support different product areas. You will work across software and hardware, and develop deep partnerships with our UX designers, product managers, and subject matter experts (e.g. architecture, housing affordability, mobility) to deliver products to unlock the true potential of a place. You will travel to Toronto to listen, learn, and partner directly with the community in conjunction with the Sidewalk Toronto project. This is not a standard software engineering position.

Build from scratch our initial models for studying and reducing energy usage. Model energy use and reductions, including creating regression-based energy baselines. Build and refine recommendation engines and predictive models (e.g. time to reach set point, monthly energy consumption). Create dashboards and interactive visualizations to share ongoing data. Design communication models catered to cohorts. Design and build data pipelines and processes for optimal and secure processing of complex data sets. Develop methods and naming schemas to unify (messy) data from building systems, sensors, APIs, and other sources, enabling a streamlined way to analyze data and prototype use cases. Build in security and privacy by design.

We are looking for a commercial person with a strong understanding of the economics of construction/ real estate. Our objective is to provide support for this person to structure this venture, build a pipeline, and become a senior leader within this self-sustaining business in the next two years or less. In the process, this role will partner with many teams and find ways to leverage the resources available: e.g. our Buildings Innovation team that is the internal first client, and has done both innovation exploration, technical diligence, and interfaced with many of the potential partners. Our Corporate Development team can and will provide commercial support and input.
