Support editorial, marketing, and operations for a small literary magazine: manage story pipelines and submissions, proofread and QA digital/print proofs, maintain mailing lists and subscriber tracker, assist with website content and social media, handle customer service emails, help organize events, and provide administrative support to the Manager.
Summary
VOLUME 0 is a literary magazine focused on the new lit scene. We publish short fiction by indie authors unafraid to break the mold. We’re looking for a highly driven assistant to join our small team and help build our brand and readership. This is a cross-functional role that includes editorial, marketing, and operations work. The position reports to the Manager of VOLUME 0.
What You Will Do…
Editorial and Content
- Maintain story and content pipelines.
- Coordinate and file story submissions from agents, writers, and publishers.
- Read and recommend stories for the magazine.
- Identify potential contributors and stories.
- Assist Manager with story editing.
Editorial Operations
- Maintain industry mailing lists and facilitate mailings of issues.
- Proofread individual stories and full issues.
- QA digital and physical proofs of the magazine and related products.
Marketing
- Assist with maintaining the website and create website content.
- Monitor and maintain distribution calendar.
- Help execute initiatives to build brand awareness and gain subscribers.
- Work on social media feeds if appropriate.
- Help organize and staff relevant parties and events.
Operations
- Maintain Volume 0 customer service email, clearing any issues daily and properly escalating any complex requests.
- Maintain subscriber tracker and facilitate fulfillment.
Other Responsibilities
- Serve as Assistant to the Manager and help with correspondence, scheduling and other tasks as requested.
- Assist with other processes and tasks as needed or requested.
About You...
- 0-3 years of some type of experience
- Highly motivated, practical person who gets things done quickly
- Demonstrated writing/editing abilities
- Strong problem-solving abilities and reasonable math skills
- Good literary and cultural taste, particularly the downtown independent scene
- Understanding of and enthusiasm for the VOLUME 0 brand and collected work
