Nature Portfolio is a world leader in publishing high-quality research. The Nature Portfolio journals include Nature, the Nature Research journals, the Nature Reviews journals, Nature Communications as well as the Communications journals and NPJ series.

About the Role

Do you love science but feel that a career at the bench isn’t enough to sate your desire to learn more about scientific research? Do you enjoy reading papers outside your chosen area of research? If the answer is ‘yes’ to any or all these questions, you could be the person we’re looking for to join the Nature Portfolio editorial team.

To help us to build on the success of the portfolio, we’re seeking an editor with experience in Earth and/or climate science who has a critical eye, a deep understanding of their subject and interests beyond, and who can think on their feet. This exciting position involves being part of a team of editors that will work closely — and flexibly — with the existing Nature Research Journals, such as Nature Geoscience and Nature Climate Change. The ideal candidate would be a critical thinker with a deep understanding of their subject, curiosity and a desire to learn about areas beyond it, and who can think on their feet.

This is a permanent position within the Nature Portfolio. The successful applicant will primarily support Nature Geoscience and Nature Climate Change and may collaborate closely with other Nature Portfolio journals as needed. Please note that responsibilities and journal assignments may evolve over time in response to portfolio needs.

The Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting editorial processes relating to manuscript assessment and the peer-review process

  • Commissioning, editing and writing content for journals

  • Working closely with Chief Editors and journal teams, while reporting to the Head of the Research Cross-Journal Team, on other aspects of journal content and strategy, as appropriate

To be considered for the position, you will have:

  • Research experience to PhD level (or equivalent) in Earth and/or climate science. Expertise relating to biogeochemistry, land surface interactions and feedbacks, hydrology, agriculture, and forestry are especially welcome.

  • A keen interest in research both within and beyond your specialty.

  • The ability to absorb and understand new areas of research.

  • Strong literary skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Postdoctoral experience a plus.

  • Previous editorial experience a plus

  • Expertise in any other related disciplines a plus

The successful candidates will report to the Head of Research Cross-Journal Team. This demanding and intellectually stimulating role is being offered in the following editorial offices in the US (New York, Jersey City) or China (Shanghai, Beijing). The position is offered on a permanent basis, and its starting date is envisaged as soon as possible.

Applicants should include a CV detailing your education, employment history, list of published scientific papers, and any achievements demonstrating your suitability for the position, a covering letter explaining their interest in the position, preferred office of employment, and a separate file with a concise discussion of a recent scientific development that you have found particularly exciting, and why (should not exceed 1 page).
