About Rye:

Rye is a seed-stage startup with an amazing founding team that includes Justin Kan, co-founder of Twitch, and founders from Reddit and Goldman Sachs. We build APIs for eCommerce, focusing on developing API and systems and building infrastructure to integrate with external platforms like Shopify, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce. Our systems are built around eCommerce, tracking orders, order placement, returns, and inventory and search. We're proud of our best-in-class tooling that includes a RESTful API, a gRPC backend system, Python, and Node.js services.

About the Role:

We're looking for a Senior / Staff Backend Engineer to join our remote-first team. The entire team is currently located in PST timezone (not a requirement). You will be responsible for building new services, standing up new infrastructure on GCP, writing high quality documentation for developers, and delivering large projects end to end. You'll be coordinating features across teams and systems, ensuring fast iterative product development with one-week sprints. You'll be expected to communicate updates proactively and work independently.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop features and build infrastructure to integrate with external platforms like Shopify, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce.

  • Work on our browser-based checkout agent.

  • Build and maintain high-quality APIs for eCommerce, focusing on tracking orders, order placement, returns, and search engines.

  • Stand up new infrastructure on GCP.

  • Deliver large projects end to end, coordinating features across team members and systems.

  • Communicate updates proactively.

  • Work independently and with a remote-first team.

Qualifications:
  • 4+ years of experience in backend engineering.

  • Proficiency in Python and/or Node.js.

  • Experience building systems with a RESTful API and a gRPC backend system.

  • Strong understanding of best practices in software development and engineering.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently.

  • Bonus: Experience working with external platforms like Shopify, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce.

  • Bonus: Experience with browser agents, or LLMs in general.

At Rye, we offer a highly competitive salary and benefits package. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to join a fast-paced, remote-first startup and have tons of autonomy and ownership in their work.
