NewsChannel 9 (WSYR-TV), located in East Syracuse, New York, has an immediate opening for a Broadcast Engineer. The Broadcast Engineer installs, operates, maintains, updates and repairs all broadcast and technology-related equipment within the facility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain all broadcast technology and equipment for the station.
  • Install, set up and configure broadcast, server and computer equipment.
  • Cable, connect, and configure technical infrastructure equipment for the station.
  • Setup and operate equipment and transmission links during live remote broadcasts.
  • Maintains satellite and microwave live trucks.  Trains live truck operators.
  • Communicates with members of the Engineering/I.T. team and other departments to effectively resolve equipment and system issues.
  • Ability to read signal flow drawings and trouble shoot problems quickly.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to work extended hours as needed. Broadcasting is a 24/7/365 operation.

Requirements and Skills:

  • Technical degree in Broadcasting, Electronics, Computer Technology, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Experience with video, audio, IP acquisition and encoding/decoding equipment.
  • Experience with network, audio and video cabling, microwave equipment, satellite antennas / receivers and other broadcast-related equipment.
  • Experience with file-based acquisition, editing, storage, transfer and transcoding systems.
  • Familiarity with audio /video streaming equipment/services.
  • Proficiency with computers, telephones, copiers and other office equipment.
  • Fluency in English. Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Experience in the following areas considered a plus:

  • Broadcasting, Electronics, I.T. Support, Networking, Electrical, RF systems.

Physical Demands and Work Environment: 

The Broadcast Engineer must be able to stand, sit, reach, climb, conduct telephone conversations, use electronic mail, work in climate- controlled areas, and work outdoors in all weather conditions. In addition, the Broadcast Engineer must be able to lift, set up and operate equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, and be able to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls.

Compensation:  $19.00 – $24.00 DOE
