The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the lead Business Development conduit/strategic relationship manager for assigned retail trading partner offices, focused predominantly in the New York City and greater New York marketplace. This associate will be responsible for being highly visible, building our brand reputation/leveraging our retail value proposition, sourcing new opportunities, and collaborating closely with all Markel stakeholders including underwriting, leadership, national Business Development, and other resources, to achieve significant GWP growth in accordance with budget, across targeted Casualty, First Party, and Professional liability product lines.

What you'll be doing:

  • Develop goals and business strategies and drive mutual accountability for results with our broker partners. Understand the differing needs of varying stakeholders (leadership, producers, brokers, insureds, product specialists, etc.) within broker organizations, adapting focus and engagement approach in a way that is most relevant to their needs.
  • Be highly visible and build strong relationships with individual brokers and in the larger marketplace, through meetings, entertainment, events, and participation in trade organizations.
  • Develop deep institutional knowledge. Support ease of doing business, by serving as a single point of contact to help brokers navigate any questions about Markel's capabilities and to connect our partners to the right resources.
  • Resolve or appropriately escalate issues related to service, BORs, clearance, or distribution channel.
  • Uncover new opportunities; vet and onboard new relationships, where appropriate.
  • Engage with National Business Development team closely, particularly in the execution/leverage of broad-scale initiatives with specific trading partners at the local/regional level.
  • Build strong internal relationships to effectively educate brokers on Markel's product and service offerings and to target business that fits our appetite, and differentiated offerings as a specialty carrier, in alignment with underwriting KPIs.
  • Stay current on market, and industry knowledge. Share feedback to help Markel be as relevant as possible in our offerings and to develop solutions to unmet needs.
  • Influence brokers and solution deals to write new business and retain key renewals across Markel’s product offerings.
  • Leverage data and tools such as broker pipelines and other reporting; identify cross-sell opportunities and encourage teamwork across underwriting groups.

What we're looking for:

  • Bachelor's Degree; Minimum 5 years’ experience in a production-focused role within the insurance industry, such as business development, underwriting, or broker roles
  • Outstanding communication, presentation, negotiation, and interpersonal skills required;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment, navigate ambiguity and adapt to change;
  • Experience working optimally in a matrixed environment required
  • Active in-person collaboration with teams is integral to the Markel Style; we have implemented a hybrid working strategy, with an expectation of minimum three days per week in office, when not actively out of the office on broker visits;
  • Must have the ability to travel up to 70%, as needed

Pay information:

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The base salary range for the Business Development Manager position is $130k - $170k/year with a 30% bonus potential.
