Position Overview
Masterworks is primarily an art investing firm, but we separately own a secondary market gallery, Level & Co., out of which our fine art team sells from our core collection (over 550 objects valued at more than $1.5 billion) and generates brokerage revenue via private sales. Current deal volume is expected to be in excess of $250 million per year.
We are looking for a senior Business Manager to lead and develop a team of art specialists in New York City. This is a role for someone who understands both the rhythms of the art market and the discipline required to run a high-performing sales operation — equally comfortable coaching a junior specialist on deal analysis as they are building processes and holding the team accountable to ambitious goals.
You will be responsible for:
- Building, managing, coaching, and developing a sales team of up to 15 art dealers at varying levels of seniority
- Owning team performance metrics — acquisitions targets, sales goals, pipeline health — and driving accountability across the team
- Building and refining processes for deal flow, counterparty vetting, business development and outreach, and negotiation
- Partnering with company leadership on compensation structure, goal-setting, promotions, and hiring decisions
- Maintaining a strong working knowledge of the market: recent sales, pricing trends, collector and advisor activity
- Collaborating across departments including Acquisitions, Marketing and Research to support sales strategy
- Managing any real estate expansions and operations related to the gallery
In the first few months, you will:
- Get fully up to speed on Level & Co. sales criteria, process, budget, and the Masterworks collection
- Conduct a thorough assessment of the team's strengths, gaps, and development needs
- Establish clear performance frameworks and near-term goals through 2027
- Build trust and working relationships with each current member of the art team
Requirements:
- 10+ years in a specialist or leadership role at a leading gallery, auction house, or as an independent dealer
- At least 3 years managing or leading a sales team, with a desire to continue in a leadership rather than sales role
- Understanding of the Post-War and Contemporary Art market, especially $1M+ segment
- Strong instincts for people — who to trust, how to develop talent, and how to read the advisor and collector landscape
- Direct, low-ego communication style; you give clear feedback and take it the same way
- Highly organized, proactive, and comfortable operating across both the qualitative and quantitative sides of the business
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Additional Requirements:
- Must be eligible for full-time US employment — no exceptions
- Must be able to work from our NY office — this is not a remote role
Benefits at Level & Co.
- Free admission to art museums and galleries
- Health, dental, and vision coverage with FSA options
- PTO, Paid Company Holidays, Paid Parental Leave, and 401k
