FUNCTION

Standard Nuclear is fueling America’s nuclear renaissance at industrial scale. Our mission is to deliver the essential building blocks of nuclear power—enabling cost-effective, safe, and secure energy for the world.

The Controller will build and lead Standard Nuclear’s accounting function from the ground up. This is a hands-on role focused on establishing core accounting infrastructure, implementing scalable systems and controls, and professionalizing financial operations to support rapid growth.

This is not a traditional Controller role overseeing an established department. The successful candidate will design and implement processes, systems, and documentation while also executing day-to-day accounting responsibilities early on. Over time, the Controller will hire and develop a team and transition into a scalable leadership role.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Accounting Department Build-Out & Infrastructure

  • Design and implement a scalable in-house accounting operating model, including core workflows and internal controls.
  • Evaluate, select, and implement accounting software, ERP systems, and supporting financial tools.
  • Establish chart of accounts, close schedules, and standardized accounting procedures.
  • Develop and document accounting policies, procedures, controls, and training materials.
  • Build foundational systems and documentation that can scale with business growth and complexity.

Accounting Operations & Execution

  • Oversee and/or execute core accounting activities including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, payroll support, and reconciliations.
  • Own month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accurate and timely reporting.
  • Prepare financial statements, management reporting, and supporting schedules.
  • Maintain fixed asset tracking, depreciation schedules, and inventory accounting as applicable.
  • Ensure accurate transaction recording in accordance with GAAP and internal requirements.
  • Review and post journal entries and maintain a clean and well-organized general ledger.

Financial Reporting & Compliance

  • Deliver accurate reporting packages and financial statement outputs to leadership.
  • Coordinate external audits (financial, tax, compliance) and serve as the primary accounting point of contact.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, applicable tax requirements, and relevant audit expectations.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis activities as needed.
  • Maintain and improve internal controls to safeguard company assets and reduce operational risk.

Team Development & Leadership

  • Build staffing plans and hiring strategy for the accounting function as the company scales.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and develop accounting staff over time.
  • Establish performance expectations, operating rhythms, and accountability mechanisms.
  • Foster a culture of accuracy, ownership, and continuous improvement.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 7–12+ years of progressive accounting experience with a strong technical accounting foundation.
  • Proven experience building, scaling, or significantly upgrading accounting functions in a growth-stage company environment.
  • Experience implementing accounting systems and improving processes in low-structure environments.
  • Background in public accounting and private industry preferred.
  • CPA required (or international equivalent).
  • Expert knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
  • Demonstrated experience selecting and implementing accounting systems / ERP platforms (NetSuite preferred; similar systems acceptable).
  • Strong Excel skills and ability to work comfortably with financial data and reporting.
  • Experience establishing internal controls and documenting accounting processes.
  • Strong builder mindset with the ability to create structure where little exists.
  • Hands-on leadership style and willingness to execute while building a scalable foundation.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate, clean financial records.
  • Clear communicator who can work effectively with non-finance stakeholders.
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity and adapting quickly as business needs evolve.

BENEFITS

  • Health, Dental & Vision Insurance
  • Health Savings Account
  • Disability and Life Insurance
  • 401K Plan
  • Paid Time Off, Holidays

  • This role is primarily office-based in New York, NY, with regular collaboration across finance, operations, and leadership teams. The position involves a mix of execution-focused accounting work and cross-functional coordination as systems and processes are built out. Occasional flexibility may be required during close cycles, audit periods, or major system implementations. Reasonable accommodation will be provided for qualified individuals.
