🏛️ About GovWell

We the people — and the taxpayers — deserve good government. Yet today, interacting with government services is often frustrating and inefficient. GovWell is building the AI operating system transforming how governments serve communities, starting with local agencies.

GovWell replaces legacy software for municipalities and counties, empowering public servants to radically streamline public services and cut internal processing time for permits and licenses by up to 90%.

Founded in 2023, GovWell powers 5,000+ mission-critical processes for agencies in 30+ states serving millions of residents. The company has raised $10M in seed funding from Work-Bench and Bienville Capital, and the team works in person at GovWell HQ in New York City. Read more about our founding story in TechCrunch.

  • Real-world impact: GovWell’s product is the system of record for government services that affect millions of Americans. From streamlining permitting for small businesses to accelerating affordable housing development, your work will make an immediate difference.

  • Join a startup in hyper-growth: We’ve found product-market fit and are scaling the business very quickly (4X ARR growth in the last year). As an early team member, you’ll learn what it takes to build a successful startup. You’ll work closely with the founders while enjoying exceptional autonomy and ownership over your work.

🌟 Role overview

GovWell is hiring a Data Solutions Engineer to help governments transition from legacy systems to modern software. You’ll own customer data migrations and GIS onboarding end-to-end, working directly with government teams to map schemas, validate data, and ensure accurate, complete data is loaded into GovWell’s platform.

This role reports directly to Ben Cohen, Co-Founder and CTO, and works closely with Product, Engineering, and Deployment to make onboarding faster, more reliable, and increasingly repeatable as GovWell scales.

We have a hybrid work culture that combines regular in-person collaboration at our New York City office (3+ days per week) with flexibility to work remotely.

💻 What you’ll do
  • Execute customer data migrations and GIS onboarding end-to-end, working directly with government staff to understand source systems, configure mappings and ingestion settings, run validations and dry-runs, and ensure accurate, complete data is loaded into GovWell.

  • Own onboarding data quality and correctness by identifying gaps, inconsistencies, and edge cases in legacy data; making documented judgment calls within defined constraints, and preventing bad or unsafe data from entering production.

  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact during onboarding, leading customer calls, clearly explaining data requirements and tradeoffs, and guiding agencies through the transition from legacy systems to GovWell with confidence.

  • Operate and improve repeatable onboarding processes using internal tools, templates, and playbooks to reduce time-to-launch, minimize manual work, and ensure migrations and GIS ingestion become increasingly predictable as volume scales.

  • Provide structured feedback to Product and Engineering teams by documenting recurring issues, unmet assumptions, and tooling gaps encountered during migrations, helping inform platform and process improvements without introducing one-off solutions.

🧠 Who you are
  • 2–3+ years of hands-on experience in data solutions, data migrations, ETL/onboarding, technical implementations, or a closely related role involving messy, real-world data.

  • Strong SQL proficiency used in practice for data validation, reconciliation, and troubleshooting.

  • Experience working directly with customer-provided data, including interpreting poorly documented schemas, resolving inconsistencies, and making tradeoffs to deliver usable outcomes.

  • Strong data quality and validation instincts: able to identify risky data issues early, run effective QA, and prevent incorrect data from reaching production.

  • Comfortable interfacing directly with non-technical stakeholders, clearly explaining technical constraints, requirements, and tradeoffs in calm, plain language.

  • Highly reliable and execution-oriented: you take full ownership of migrations end-to-end, communicate proactively, and deliver on deadlines.

  • Process-driven and disciplined: you follow playbooks, avoid one-off solutions, and contribute to making onboarding more repeatable as GovWell scales.

  • Motivated by the real-world impact that clean, trusted data has on helping governments serve residents better.

🖥️ Our tech stack
  • SQL – your core tool for validation, reconciliation, and troubleshooting

  • Airflow – for managing data migration pipelines

  • PostgreSQL – our core database

  • Python – used in data workflows and automation

  • Hex – your general-purpose data tool for loading, transforming, and QAing data

  • RedwoodJS, GraphQL, TypeScript, AWS – the broader software engineering environment you’ll interact with

💸 Compensation and benefits
