What you will be doing

Director of Insurance

The Director of Insurance plays an integral role on Hospital for Special Surgery’s (HSS) Insurance Team which is responsible for the oversight of insurance policy placement across the enterprise, working closely with internal and external stakeholders including the Hospital’s insurance brokers. The team also reviews contract provisions around insurance and indemnification provisions and manages the insurance application process.  The team monitors insurance industry trends and evaluates coverage limits and any gaps. The Director of Insurance will report to the SVP, Deputy General Counsel and Chief Risk Officer, managing the day-to-day operations of the insurance team
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 
•    Direct the strategic placement and oversight of the hospital’s insurance portfolio, including property, cyber, management liability, auto, rolling owner-controlled insurance programs, and other specialty coverages. Establish and direct program design, including limits, retention levels, and coverage structures, ensuring alignment with  the organization’s risk profile, operational scale, and long-term strategic objectives 
•    Serve as the Hospital’s lead strategic advisor for insurance and risk financing, directing executive-level relationships with brokers (Alliant and Marsh) carriers, captive partners, consultants, and other key partners to optimize insurance program performance and market positioning. Oversee market intelligence, benchmarking, and competitive analysis to inform enterprise insurance strategy, enhance renewal outcomes, and drive continuous improvement in coverage effectiveness and cost efficiency 
•    Provide strategic oversight of the insurance renewal and underwriting process, directing end-to-end execution of submissions and ensuring alignment with organizational priorities. Establish underwriting strategy, guide submission development, and exercise independent judgement in evaluating coverage structures, market positioning, and renewal recommendations 
•    Lead allocation methodology across the enterprise, directing distribution of premiums and risk financing costs among hospital entities. Evaluate organizational changes, new ventures, and emerging risks to ensure equitable and strategic allocation, partnering with brokers to design and implement allocation frameworks for new and evolving entities 
•    Lead the development and oversight of the annual insurance budget, aligning financial planning with enterprise risk financing strategy and organizational priorities  
•    Provide strategic guidance on vendor contracts, advising on appropriate insurance coverages, limits, and structures based on scope of work and risk exposure 
•    Direct the review of lease-related insurance provisions, ensuring HSS can comply with proposals 
•    Support and help drive MIAC renewals as directed by Chief Risk Officer
•    Collaborate with the Chief Risk Officer to develop and refine MIAC board presentations 
•    Oversee governance of certificates of insurance issuance, ensuring timely and accurate delivery to landlords and adherence to compliance standards 
•    Obtain landlord approvals for special events put on by the Hospital (e.g., Food Truck Employee Appreciation events, Bike HSS, etc.)
•    Serve as a strategic advisor to internal stakeholders on insurance matters, including questions relating to insurance policies (e.g., benchmarking, general policy questions, etc.) 
•    Exercise independent judgement in evaluating and shaping insurance program structure, coverage adequacy, and broker and carrier recommendations, proactively identifying emerging risks and driving informed decision-making. Establish clear escalation thresholds, evaluating only those maters with significant financial, operational, or strategic impact 
•    Directly mentor and develop the Senior Analyst, establishing performance expectations, facilitating professional development, and ensuring continuity of insurance operations 
•    Monitor and assess emerging healthcare industry risks, insurance market developments, and regulatory trends, providing strategic recommendations to executive leadership 
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:  

•    Bachelor's degree required  
•    10 + years of progressive experience in insurance, risk management, healthcare insurance, brokerage, or related fields 
•    Demonstrated experience leading complex insurance placements and negotiating with brokers and carriers 
•    Experience advising senior executives on insurance, risk financing, and risk transfer strategies 
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:  

•    Insurance Products: Comprehensive understanding of hospital insurance structures, including captive insurance programs, general liability, professional liability, and property insurance.
•    Claims Management: Understanding of claim lifecycles, including incident reporting, investigation, and litigation management.
•    Executive Presence: Demonstrated ability to advise and influence senior leaders through clear, concise, communication of complex insurance and risk financing concepts.  
•    Strategic Leadership: Proven ability to develop, articulate, and execute enterprise-wide insurance and risk financing strategies aligned with organizational objectives and risk appetite. 
•    External Relationship Management: Strong track record of directing high-value relationships with brokers, insurers, consultants, and executive stakeholders.
•    Decision Making & Judgement: Exercised independent judgement in evaluating complex, ambiguous risk situations, balancing competing priorities, and make sound business decisions with significant financial and operational implications. 
•    Cross-Functional Leadership: Ability to lead complex, enterprise-wide initiatives across multiple stakeholders, driving alignment, accountability, and execution in dynamic environments.

•    Negotiation, Communication & Market Execution: Demonstrated success leading negotiations with brokers, and insurers to secure favorable coverage terms, pricing, and service structures, coupled with the ability to clearly and effectively communicate concepts, both verbally and in writing, to senior leadership and stakeholders across the organization.
•    Financial Acumen & Risk Analytics: Strong skills in budgeting, managing insurance premiums, and analyzing loss data.
•    Analytical & Strategic Thinking: Ability to identify trends in liability to develop strategic insurance initiatives.
