About the roleAs an Engineering Director at Duolingo, you'll have the unique opportunity to shape the future of language learning by leading a talented team of engineers in developing innovative solutions. This role combines strategic thinking, technical skill, and team leadership, requiring you to oversee project management, drive technical direction, and foster a culture of collaboration and growth.
Social Area:
- You'll be an engineering lead of the newly created Social Area within our user growth organization, focused on solving one of the hardest problems for our learners: staying motivated. Your teams will build new social features and improve existing ones like Leaderboards, Friends Quests, Kudos, and the Feed; grow the in-app social graph (e.g. Follow Suggestions, User Search); and strengthen learner identity (e.g. Profile and Avatars).

- Supervise teams under the Social Area to help drive strategies and roadmap
- Develop and manage other managers
- Balance ambitious 0->1 product innovations, thoughtful iteration on existing features, and engineering excellence work
- Provide guidance on scalable, high-quality system design and technical decision

- Experience developing and leading software engineering teams and setting technical direction
- Consistent track record managing managers and mentoring technical leaders
- Extensive experience in rapid-growth, consumer-facing, data-driven companies
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in ambiguous, fast-paced, and unstructured settings
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
We post a multi-level salary range for all of our roles.
This is not inclusive of the rest of our awesome portfolio that includes equity compensation and world-class benefits. Our salary ranges are the same for all US locations. The actual salary within the range is determined by many factors including but not limited to, skills, experience, education, and internal equity.
