Location:

New York, NY

Executive Editor, Vanity Fair
Location: New York City (On-Site)
Reports to: Deputy Editor

About the Role:
Vanity Fair is seeking a bold, curious, and imaginative Executive Editor to help shape the future of one of the most iconic editorial brands in media. This role calls for a creative powerhouse with a deep appreciation for the many forms journalism can take—narrative features, news analysis, visual storytelling, audio, video, live events—and a sharp eye for the stories and voices that define our cultural moment.

We’re looking for a leader with big, ambitious ideas, and who sees connections between power and potential, influence and style, celebrity and substance. This editor will manage a team of top-level writers and editors and be expected to expand our roster of writers, nurture talent, and dream up editorial projects that push beyond traditional formats.

The Executive Editor will play a central role in story development and execution across platforms, ensuring that everything we publish—from deep investigations to quick-turn dispatches, newsletters to social-first features—feels urgent, stylish, and unmistakably Vanity Fair.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conceive and develop high-impact editorial ideas that span formats and platforms—print features, digital packages, podcasts, newsletters, video, and social

  • Lead major cross-disciplinary projects, from cover stories to special issues to live event coverage

  • Guide a team of editors and writers, overseeing everything from quick-turn political analysis to long-lead celebrity profiles

  • Recruit and cultivate a diverse stable of writers—new and established—across beats and mediums

  • Shape and refine story pitches, helping editors and writers find the most compelling angles and execution strategies

  • Work closely with visuals, audio, social, events, and product teams to build out stories in immersive and innovative ways

  • Bring a discerning editorial eye to every stage of story development—from conception and reporting to writing, packaging, and distribution

  • Drive editorial excellence across all platforms with a focus on originality, voice, impact, and cultural relevance

  • Monitor audience behavior, industry trends, and platform performance to inform strategy and experimentation

  • Contribute to overall editorial vision in collaboration with the Editor-in-Chief and senior leadership

Who You Are:

  • A highly creative editor with 10+ years of experience in high-level editorial roles, ideally across multiple mediums

  • A cultural omnivore with deep fluency in politics, show business, media, fashion, tech, and society

  • A collaborative leader with a track record of developing talent and managing complex editorial workflows

  • A visionary who sees stories before they’re trending—and knows how to make them essential reading/viewing/listening

  • Equally comfortable in a headline brainstorm or a cover concept meeting, and just as invested in a great tweet as a groundbreaking feature

  • Adept at balancing daily publishing needs with long-lead planning and big-picture strategy

  • Curious, courageous, and excited to take creative risks that feel true to the brand and surprising to the audience

  • Experienced with audience development, analytics tools, and editorial planning across platforms

The expected base salary range for this position is from $170,000-$225,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
