What is Spade?

Financial institutions process billions of transactions every day across cards, ACH, wires, and third party aggregators. But most of that data is difficult to use. Descriptions are inconsistent, merchant names don’t match, and categories vary by payment type.

Spade is a data and AI platform that turns messy transaction strings into structured, verified records — and gives teams the tools to act on it across authorization, attribution, analytics, and AI initiatives. Spade leads the market in terms of merchant coverage, matching accuracy, geolocation data, and speed of transaction enrichment. Customers such as, FIS, Bilt, Mercury, Stripe, alongside many other leaders in fintech and financial services, trust Spade's data to enable personalized rewards programs, accurate applied spending rules, precise analytics requests, and innovative AI-powered features.

Spade is a fast growing, Series B company backed by industry experts and top tier investors (including Oak HC/FT, a16z, Flourish Ventures, Y-Combinator, and Gradient Ventures). We’re a lean and execution-oriented hybrid team, passionate about building exceptional products for our growing customer base. We care deeply about diversity of background, experience, and opinion. We value empathy, curiosity, and passion, and strive to create an environment where individuals have autonomy and the ability to take ownership over their work.

What will you be doing?

As Spade’s first finance hire, you will build the financial foundation for our next stage of growth. You’ll take ownership of our financial strategy, planning, and operations—from monthly close and cash management, to FP&A and strategic finance. You’ll collaborate closely with the COO, CEO, and CRO, acting as a true thought partner to shape strategy, support key decisions with robust analysis, and drive business growth.

  • Strategic Partnership: Partner closely with the leadership team on financial strategy and scenario planning. Leverage data and insights to inform major business decisions (pricing, hiring, market expansion), challenge assumptions, and accelerate business growth.
  • Financial Planning & Analysis: Develop budgets and forecasts, monitor budget vs. actuals, and build dashboards for key metrics (e.g. revenue growth, burn rate, GTM metrics, unit economics, usage-based revenue drivers etc.).
  • Investor & Board Reporting: Prepare monthly/quarterly financial reports and forecasts for our board and investors. Support future fundraising by owning data room prep, due diligence requests, etc.
  • Cash Management & Capital Strategy: Track cash runway and working capital. Advise leadership on capital strategy, fundraising timing, and optimal deployment of the capital we've raised. Build and maintain cash flow models that inform strategic decisions.
  • Operational Build-out: Implement and own finance tools/software as needed (e.g. QuickBooks, expense management, financial modeling in Google Sheets). Establish internal controls and financial policies to enable scalable growth.
  • Accounting & Bookkeeping: Own the monthly close process, managing our accountants to ensure our financial records are accurate and GAAP-compliant, and manage invoices, payables, and receivables.
What experience, skills, and qualifications are necessary?
  • 7+ years of experience in a finance role
  • 3+ years of experience in-house at a high growth B2B fintech startup and deep understanding of key SaaS/usage based business metrics
  • Experience supporting a fundraising process — data room prep, investor diligence, financial narrative
  • Familiarity with usage-based or consumption pricing models and their implications for revenue recognition and forecasting
  • Generalist finance skillset (foundational accounting and bookkeeping knowledge, strong FP&A skills, advanced financial modeling skills)
  • Strategic business mindset and understanding of key business drivers
  • Comfort with ambiguity
  • Ability to challenge and influence business outcomes
  • Ownership mindset and bias towards action
  • Strong preference for candidates with a background in investment banking, private equity, or management consulting
  • NYC required
