Job Description:

Department Overview: This Financial Crime Risk Analyst  role under the Sanctions Group will perform 2nd level reviews of payment screening and name screening alerts to identify any sanctions implications or individuals/entities that may be designated. In addition, this role also involves periodic KYC reviews of sanctioned country nationals or citizens of broadly sanctioned jurisdictions. Lastly, this Analyst will also review referrals or escalations from other business lines to determine any sanctions implications or red flags that may include sanctions evasion.


The Financial Crime Risk Analyst – Sanctions provide a range of analytical, research, and assessment support to the development and enhancement of the enterprise’s sanctions risk management programs and processes. Assists in reviewing and analyzing higher-risk customer or transactional information to identify potential sanctions risks, prohibited relationships, or transactions involving designated persons or entities.

Depth & Scope:

  • Provides specialized guidance, assistance, and support to functions and Financial Crimes Risk Management (FCRM) teams on sanctions compliance matters, including screening, escalation, and regulatory interpretation
  • Performs end-to-end sanctions-related activities, such as alert reviews, due diligence, and documentation of decisions in accordance with global standards
  • Requires advanced understanding of sanctions regulations, screening systems, and integration points with related areas such as AML, ABAC, and FCRM, along with knowledge of TD products and services
  • Manages ambiguity and applies judgment to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve sanctions compliance issues, ensuring timely escalation and adherence to regulatory requirements
  • Interprets and administers sanctions policies and procedures, adopts and implements process improvements to strengthen controls and mitigate risk
  • Makes process and capacity management decisions for sanctions operations to ensure compliance and efficiency, guided by practices, procedures, and operating plans
  • Handles moderate complexity in operational, reporting, and process analysis functions requiring a short to medium-term focus on sanctions risk mitigation and governance enhancements

Education & Experience:

  • Undergraduate Degree
  • 3+ years relevant experience

Customer Accountabilities:

  • Provides research, evaluation, operational, reporting, and analytical support for sanctions oversight, advisory services, and control functions to business partners, ensuring timely and effective sanctions compliance
  • Coordinates requests to and from business partners related to sanctions compliance activities
  • Assists in preparing summaries, communications, reports, and presentations for management, regulators, and other internal and external stakeholders regarding sanctions matters
  • Recommends responses to enterprise sanctions program questions and immediately escalate any sensitive sanctions-related issues according to departmental procedures
  • Analyzes data and draw conclusions to meet sanctions program health reporting requirements
  • Analyzes emerging trends related to sanctions regulatory changes, reporting, or other departmental functions, and provides recommendations to address gaps, issues, and enhancements in sanctions controls
  • Proactively identifies sanctions matters requiring additional review or escalation, and liaises with appropriate staff to resolve as needed
  • Coordinates tracking and reporting of sanctions compliance initiatives and programs

  • Prioritizes and manages own workload to meet SLA requirements for service and productivity
  • Exercises discretion in managing correspondence, information, and all matters of confidentiality; escalates issues where appropriate
  • Protects the interests of the organization – identifies and manages risks, and escalates non-standard, high-risk transactions/activities as necessary
  • Acquires and applies expertise in the FCRM discipline; provides guidance, assistance, and direction to other FCRM partners
  • Identifies, recommends, and executes standard practices applicable to the FCRM discipline
  • Keeps abreast of emerging issues, trends, and evolving regulatory requirements
  • Maintains a culture of risk management and control, supported by effective processes in alignment with risk appetite
  • Adheres to internal policies/procedures and applicable regulatory guidelines
  • Coordinates with other FCRM partners and compliance partners to ensure consistency in the application of FCRM
