Founding Engineer

Pillar protects global businesses from macroeconomic risk by automatically hedging their freight, currency, and commodities exposure.

In the past 4 years, volatility across these asset classes - swings from +20% to 450% - has wreaked havoc on SMEs who rely on them to function. Yet, the solutions needed to limit the effects of this volatility – seasoned traders and investment banking services – remain in the hands of the few: billion dollar companies with unlimited resources. Pillar solves this by bringing protection previously available only for the largest corporations to the 30M+ SMEs worldwide who have $7T+ of underserved risk. With a few clicks, customers are able to manage their risks through Pillar’s seamless, end to end platform.

We are looking for a talented founding engineer to join us on our mission to bring transformative financial services to businesses globally. You will be working on designing, building and scaling Pillar’s platform alongside a strong team that has varied and thorough experiences in the domain being tackled. The ideal candidate will have experience working at a fast–paced engineering organization, and tackling complex problems. You will be expected to take solutions to problems from 0 to 1, and maintain full ownership over all services that you build. Over time, your role will grow and evolve with the company, including managing and mentoring new hires, and taking on an engineering leadership role. 

While a prior background in fintech would be helpful, it is not a requirement; we will teach you the domain knowledge you will need. Ultimately, we look for people who are always eager to learn and willing to go the distance as we continue on our journey to reshape financial services for the millions. 

• Design, build and maintain the microservices that make up the Pillar system

• Work on integrations with multiple vendors that help power the platforms

• Design and build the customer facing front-end for the platform

• Participate in designing and architecting the infrastructure behind our services

• Work to help evolve the platform as we scale the product

• Help us define and develop our tech stack as the product grows

• Help us build out and mentor an incredible team

• 2+ years of software engineering experience

• Familiarity with Go, Typescript, Postgres, and AWS

• Excellent ability to prioritize different tasks

• Transparent and honest communicator; be willing to ask questions, offer opinions, and facilitate discussions

• Exude empathy and a collaborative spirit in a high-paced environment

• A sense of deep curiosity: always keen on learning more about all aspects of the customer, domain, and product

Nice to have: 

• Prior fintech experience

• Experience designing and building in distributed systems

• Experience building trading systems

The annualized salary for this role is $90,000-$150,000 plus equity and benefits. This salary range is based on the current available market data, and represents the expected salary range for this role. Actual compensation will vary based on skills, experience, and which offer each candidate selects.
