Company Description

Today, when you go to your doctor and get referred to a specialist (e.g., for sleep apnea), your doctor sends out a referral and tells you, “They’ll be in touch soon.” So you wait. And wait. Sometimes days, weeks, or even months. Why? Because too often specialists and medical services are overwhelmed with referrals and the painstakingly manual process it takes to qualify your referral prevents them from getting around to it on time, or sometimes at all. Tennr prevents these delays and denials by making sure every referral gets where it needs to go, with the right info, at the right time. Powered by RaeLM™ Tennr reads, extracts, and acts on every piece of patient information so providers can capture more referrals, slash denials, and reduce delays.

Role Description

Tennr is hiring a General Counsel to build and lead our in-house legal function. You’ll be the go-to advisor for everything from enterprise contracting and product risk to regulatory compliance and corporate governance. This is a high-trust, high-impact role that will work across the executive team and partner closely with Sales, Product, Finance, Security, and People teams to ensure we’re making fast, informed decisions with the right legal guardrails in place.

You’ll bring a builder’s mindset—designing processes that scale, negotiating deals with clarity and speed, and proactively managing risk across a regulated, enterprise-facing business. You should be comfortable owning both strategic legal decisions and tactical day-to-day work as we continue to scale in an evolving AI, data privacy, and regulatory landscape.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the company’s lead legal advisor across corporate, commercial, product, privacy, employment, and healthcare regulatory matters.

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of agreements, including healthcare enterprise MSAs, BAAs, SOWs, vendor agreements, licensing and strategic partnership agreements.

  • Partner with Sales and Customer Success to navigate complex procurement, privacy, and security reviews with enterprise customers, with a focus on healthcare vendor requirements and attestations.

  • Advise on regulatory compliance with healthcare laws (e.g. Medicare/Medicaid and CMS Rules, HIPAA, state-specific payer regulations, Anti-Kickback Statute, Stark Law, and relevant state law) and commercial frameworks (e.g., SOC 2, federal and state data privacy).

  • Own legal risk assessment and mitigation processes across product development, marketing, security, and operations.

  • Oversee corporate governance, including board support, equity matters, and cap table oversight in partnership with Finance.

  • Manage outside counsel relationships and ensure legal spend is efficient and high-leverage.

  • Partner with People Ops on employment policies, disputes, and investigations.

  • Design and implement legal processes and documentation that scale with company growth and reduce business friction.

Candidate Qualifications

Required

  • J.D. from a top-tier ABA-accredited law school and active bar membership (in good standing).

  • 10+ years of legal experience, with at least 4 years in-house at a healthcare or digital health company.

  • Deep experience negotiating enterprise commercial agreements in healthcare, including IP, data privacy (HIPAA, state data privacy laws, and information security terms.

  • Fluency with healthcare data privacy and security frameworks (HIPAA, HITECH) and commercial compliance (SOC 2, privacy laws).

  • Experience with federal and state payor regulations, CMS guidelines, and GPO/MSO vendor obligations

  • Experience managing legal functions across product, employment, corporate, and regulatory domains.

  • Exceptional business acumen and communication skills, with an ability to operate independently in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting board governance and venture-backed company operations (federal and state securities law, cap table matters, financing, M&A).

  • Exposure to payer-side contracts and compliance frameworks in healthcare.

  • A working knowledge of artificial intelligence technology and the evolving regulatory landscape, large language models, and modern software development process.

  • Previous experience scaling an internal legal function.

Why Tennr?
  • Drive Impact: one of our company values is Cowboy, meaning you set the pace. You won’t just talk about things, you’ll get them done. And feel the impact.

  • Develop Operational Expertise: learn the inner workings of scaling systems, tools, and infrastructure

  • Innovate with Purpose: we’re not just doing this for fun (although we do have a lot of fun). At Tennr, you’ll join a high-caliber team maniacally focused on reducing patient delays across the U.S. healthcare system.

  • Build Relationships: collaborate and connect with like-minded, driven individuals in our Chelsea office 4 days/week (preferred)

  • Free lunch! Plus a pantry full of snacks.

Benefits
  • New, spacious Chelsea office

  • Unlimited PTO

  • 100% paid employee health benefit options

  • Employer-funded 401(k) match

  • Competitive parental leave
