ABOUT THE POSITION:
The Urban Dove Team Charter seeks a Junior Staff Accountant to support the organization’s day-to-day accounting and financial operations.  Working under the supervision and guidance of the Manager, Staff Accountant, the Junior Staff Accountant will assist with maintaining accurate financial records, reconciling accounts, preparing journal entries and supporting schedules, tracking grant activity, and supporting the monthly and year-end financial process.

The Junior Staff Accountant will work closely with the Manager, Staff Accountant and other member of the Finance Team to ensure transactions are accurately recorded and supporting documentation is properly maintained.  This position is ideal for an accounting professional with 1-3 of related experience who is looking to strengthen their accounting knowledge and gain broader experience in nonprofit and education.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:
The Central Office is the non-profit entity that manages the Urban Dove Charter Schools. The CMO provides a wide range of services–including back office functions, accounting, hiring, professional development, data analysis, public relations, advocacy, and more. The CMO is also responsible for providing support structures for the schools and ensuring proper replication of the model as the organization expands.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with maintaining and balancing the organization's automated accounting platform.
  • Support compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Assist with the preparation of monthly consolidated financial reports and supporting schedules.
  • Review and record accounting transactions to support accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Assist with account reconciliations and investigate discrepancies, escalating issues to the Manager, Staff Accountant as appropriate.
  • Prepare journal entries for review and approval, including corrections, allocations, and expense accruals.
  • Assist with tracking grant funding and the allocation of federal grants.
  • Maintain supporting schedules for restricted and unrestricted grants.
  • Assist with budget-to-actual variance analysis and research discrepancies under the direction of the Manager, Staff Accountant.
  • Support quarterly payroll reconciliations to help ensure accurate reporting to tax agencies.
  • Assist with annual audits by compiling requested documentation, schedules, and supporting data for review by the Manager, Staff Accountant and outside auditors.
  • Maintain organized and complete accounting records and supporting documentation.
  • Collaborate with members of the Finance Team and other departments to obtain information necessary to complete accounting activities.
  • Support the Manager, Staff Accountant and other members of the Finance team with month-end and year-end closing activities.
  • Assist with special assignments and ad hoc accounting and finance projects as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.; Master's preferred.
  • 1-3 years in a related accounting role.
  • Experience in not-for-profit
  • Skilled with various accounting platforms and experience in troubleshooting synching issues with accounting platforms.
  • Prior leadership or mentoring of junior accountants.
  • Skilled in accounting software, especially organization-specific platforms.
  • Strong Excel and MS Office skills.
  • Comprehensive understanding of GAAP.
  • Awareness of federal, state, and local tax regulations.
  • Familiarity with audit processes.
  • Analytical with problem-solving capabilities.
  • Clear written and verbal communication.
  • Detail-oriented, accurate, and able to multitask.
  • Collaborative team player.
  • Experience collaborating with the Director of Finance and leading or guiding a team.
