LEGAL / COMPLIANCE OPERATIONS SPECIALIST

ABOUT CURRENT

Current is a leading consumer fintech platform transforming financial access for everyday Americans with over six million members. We provide access to financial solutions that seamlessly work together to solve the needs of our members and enable all Americans to build better financial futures. Based in NYC, our results-driven environment drives us to build better products, grow faster, and empower everyone on our team to have an impact on our business and mission to improve financial outcomes.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for a Legal/Compliance Operations Specialist to join our Legal and Compliance team in New York. In this role, you will be the operational backbone of the Legal and Compliance function: you will own the day-to-day processing of legal processes served on Current, including garnishments, levies, subpoenas, and bankruptcy notices, and provide hands-on administrative and project support to our attorneys and compliance team members. You will also have the opportunity to build and maintain the systems, trackers, and workflows that keep a small, high-volume legal team running, and you will partner closely with Compliance, Risk Operations, Member Experience, Finance, and our bank partners to make sure legal and compliance obligations are met accurately and on time.

This role is ideal for someone who has handled equivalent legal processes in a bank, fintech, or law firm setting, is meticulous about deadlines and documentation, and is energized by using technology to make legal work faster and more consistent. You will be expected to identify repetitive work, evaluate whether AI or automation can do it better, and put those tools into production responsibly.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Legal Process Management

  • Serve as the primary point of intake for legal and other process served on Current, including bank account garnishments, levies, subpoenas, bankruptcy notifications, and account verifications
  • Review incoming process for facial validity, proper service, and jurisdiction; identify affected member accounts; and coordinate account holds, releases, and remittances with Risk Operations, Finance, and bank partners within the deadlines required by the issuing court or agency
  • Prepare and send customer notices, responses to issuing parties, and certifications as required, and escalate contested, ambiguous, or high-exposure matters to attorneys with a clear summary and recommendation
  • Maintain complete, audit-ready records of every item of legal process received, actions taken, and dates, and produce periodic reporting on volume, turnaround times, and exceptions
  • Draft and maintain written procedures for legal process handling

Legal Administration and Attorney Support

  • Manage the Legal team’s document management system, contract repository, and matter tracker; ensure executed agreements, corporate records, and regulatory correspondence are filed, indexed, and retrievable
  • Assist with litigation and regulatory inquiry support, including document collection and fact investigation
  • Work with the Legal team’s attorneys to assist in the reviewing, drafting, and negotiation of contracts–including NDAs, DPAs, vendor agreements, and more–to ensure that deals are negotiated and executed in accordance with business timelines

Legal and Compliance Operations, Technology, and AI-Enabled Workflows

  • Identify repetitive, high-volume legal, compliance, and other administrative tasks and design workflows that use AI and automation tools to reduce manual effort while preserving accuracy and appropriate attorney oversight
  • Deploy and administer AI-assisted tools for tasks such as first-pass review and data extraction from legal process
  • Partner with Compliance, InfoSec, and Engineering to evaluate new legal technology and AI vendors

ABOUT YOU

  • 3+ years of experience in legal operations, paralegal, or legal administrative roles, with direct experience processing garnishments, levies, subpoenas, and/or bankruptcy notices at a bank, fintech, lender, or law firm serving financial institutions
  • Working knowledge of the legal process lifecycle for a deposit and consumer credit business, including account holds, exemption rules, remittance timing, and the effect of the automatic stay on collection activity
  • Demonstrated, hands-on experience using AI tools in a legal or operations setting to streamline administrative work, and the judgment to know when a task should not be delegated to an AI tool
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organization, with a track record of managing hard deadlines across many concurrent matters without errors
  • Sound judgment about confidentiality, privilege, and escalation; you know what to decide yourself and what to bring to an attorney
  • Comfort operating in a fast-moving environment, and the initiative to build what is missing
  • Experience at a consumer fintech, neobank, or sponsor-bank program manager, particularly with debit or secured credit card products
  • Familiarity with Reg E, Reg Z, the FCRA, and state garnishment and exemption laws as they apply to deposit accounts

This role has a base salary range of $85,000 - $120,000. Compensation is determined based on experience, skill level, and qualifications, which are assessed during the interview process.
