About this role

About BlackRock BlackRock is one of the world’s preeminent asset management firms and a premier provider of global investment management, risk management and advisory services to institutional, intermediary, and individual investors around the world. BlackRock offers a range of solutions — from rigorous fundamental and quantitative active management approaches aimed at maximizing outperformance to highly efficient indexing strategies designed to gain broad exposure to the world’s capital markets. Our clients can access our investment solutions through a variety of product structures, including individual and institutional separate accounts, mutual funds and other pooled investment vehicles, and the industry-leading iShares® ETFs. Team Overview This role requires strong hands‑on experience with Linux operating systems, modern server technologies, and cloud platforms. A foundational understanding of hardware interoperability and application software is beneficial. The engineer will collaborate closely with platform engineering colleagues across local and global teams. In this position, you may also work with teammates on activities such as system builds, updates, testing, and sharing technical findings, as well as providing DevOps support for legacy, current, and emerging technologies. The global APG Platform UNIX team comprises more than 50 engineers across three regions, collectively supporting a highly available UNIX environment hosted both on‑premises and in the cloud. We’re hiring a Cloud Platform Engineer (Linux/UNIX) to design and automate large‑scale platform services across on‑prem and cloud. You’ll build IaC, pipelines, and tooling (Python/Terraform) that power highly available systems, applying SRE best practices to deliver reliability, performance, and great developer experience. Role Responsibility Successful performance in this role requires the ability to carry out the responsibilities to a high standard. The following criteria outline the knowledge, skills, and competencies expected for this position. Engineer, maintain, and optimize hybrid UNIX platforms across cloud (Azure/AWS) and onprem environments, ensuring reliability and performance of 12,000+ global RHEL hosts. Design and automate platform workflows include server builds, provisioning, configuration management, and lifecycle operations using tools such as Ansible, AWX, Puppet, Python, and Agentic AI. Implement and enhance DevOps/SRE practices—monitoring, incident response, system recovery, DR participation, and continuous improvement of automation, dashboards, and vulnerability remediation. Troubleshoot complex system issues, resolve escalations, support bridge calls, and collaborate with global engineering teams to deliver stable and secure UNIX platform services. Develop and maintain clear documentation including SOPs, patching processes, and reporting, while communicating effectively with partners and stakeholders. Experience Extensive hands‑on expertise with RHEL and deep understanding of Linux system internals. Proven experience engineering solutions in cloud environments (Azure or AWS preferred), including compute, networking, and platform services. Strong experience with Enterprise-grade container orchestration platform supporting declarative infrastructure and horizontal scaling/containers, including designing, deploying, and troubleshooting containerized workloads (highly desirable). Solid familiarity with modern DevOps, CI/CD, and SRE principles, with the ability to apply automation, observability, and reliability engineering techniques. Practical, hands‑on experience with Infrastructure‑as‑Code (IaC) tooling such as Terraform or declarative infrastructure lifecycle management control planes (highly desirable). Demonstrated ability to build automation using Python, Ansible, or emerging Agentic AI frameworks to improve platform efficiency and reduce manual effort. Experience designing and managing build, image/kickstart, provisioning, and configuration management pipelines (e.g., Puppet). Working knowledge of server hardware architecture across vendors such as HPE and Dell, with the ability to integrate hardware considerations into platform design. Strong understanding of core networking and system services (TCP/IP, NFS, DNS, LDAP, FTP, NTP, Samba, Autofs) and how they influence platform reliability and performance. Proficiency in security hardening, performance engineering, and system‑level diagnostics using modern monitoring and analysis tools. Conceptual understanding of storage and networking architectures, and how these components interact in a cloud and onprem hybrid environment. Manager Comments • A minimum of 4+ years comparative industry experience • Degree preferred • The position will be required to work on shifts (not overnight). These shifts will also cover the weekends. • Workdays could be staggered over the week, likely Tuesday to Saturday schedule. • Individual contributor role.
