This role has a hybrid work schedule (2 days onsite) and we are considering candidates based in Portsmouth, NH, Boston, MA, Plano, TX and Indianapolis, IN.

Job Introduction:
The GDS Application Environments team is looking to hire a candidate for their Manager, Platform Engineering - Kubernetes position. The candidate will be responsible for hiring, managing, and deploying resources across team(s) to enable optimal alignment of staff to business priorities. Coaches and evaluates performance and quality of work delivered by team members. Creates motivating work environment for team(s) and ensures team is constantly learning and delivering quality code. Understands tools, architecture, security and scalability needs for assigned team(s); provides technical engineering guidance especially with less experienced team members. Manages total cost of ownership, advocates for the removal of technical debt, assists and supports team effectiveness. Champions and effectively utilizes agile methodology and practices.

Manage the senior engineering team that is pivotal to enabling application delivery, advancing self-service developer capabilities, modernizing cloud and on-premises infrastructure, and sustaining platform reliability, security, and operations.
About the job:
  • Establish clear expectations and accountability while building an inclusive, high-engagement culture where people can challenge ideas, learn from failure, and do their best work.
  • Ensures services and platforms are enhanced and maintained to meet business's functional need. In partnership with Product Owner, identify key performance indicators to ensure work product, operational stability and security excellence is maintained.
  • Utilizes AI and automated reporting to set and coach toward clear engineering goals and improve planning, engineering workflows and platform outcomes. Do this while maintaining human accountability.
  • Understands the business domain and product vision. In partnership with Director, Architect, Tech Leaders and Scrum Master align the team's work to the strategic business and technical goals .
  • Participates in the development of technology vision, strategies, critical success factors and operating plans for platform
  • Responsible for defining operational standards and metrics, establishing how they will be measured and holding team members accountable to meeting them. On-point leader for your space's incident management.
  • Initiates and fosters collaborative partnerships with aligned vendor. Responsible vendor management and workforce planning for your unit.
  • Demonstrated success influencing across organizational boundaries, managing dependencies, and communicating technical risks and decisions to both engineering and executive audiences.
  • Removes roadblocks and obstacles; manages interdependencies when needed, including alignment with partner teams your team relies upon to deliver.
  • Manages the quality of work delivered by team members and effectively addresses performance issues in a timely manner.
  • Understands the team's work process enough to provide relevant technical coaching and guide engineering trade off decisions.
  • Coordinates and delivers performance reviews. Drives professional development via hands on learning, mentoring experiences, rotations as applicable.
  • Hires talent and actively engages in recruiting processes.
  • Coordinates with vendors to ensure external talent management, on-boarding and transitions are performed in a highly effective manner.
  • May lead efforts to evaluate, select and implement new technologies to enhance application or platform.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor`s or Master`s Degree in technical or business discipline.
  • Minimum of 5+ years' experience in a practice relevant domain including delivering software solutions in an agile environment.
  • Minimum 3 years in a leadership role preferred.
  • Proven ability to create a healthy team culture, build fully engaged staff and gain technical staff's buy-in on the impact of their work.
  • Technical background managing a large-scale platform that is consumed by multiple business units across a highly regulated enterprise.
  • Hands-on experience managing cloud native infrastructure-based operations and infrastructure as code, devops, CICD based solutions.
  • Able to manage complex technology development concepts, capabilities and maturity.
  • Requires excellent analytical ability, consultative communication, presentation and management skills, strong judgment and ability to effectively liaise with cross functional stakeholders and optimize teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate collaboratively and build consensus. In-depth knowledge of technology standards and guidelines; knowledge of management concepts, practices and techniques; thorough knowledge of business functions and operations, objectives and strategies.

Preferred skills:
  • Experience with managed Kubernetes services such as Amazon EKS and/or on-premises distributions.
  • Practical familiarity with AI-assisted engineering and understanding of where AI adds value and where human accountability remains. Expertise with a specific AI product is not required.

The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role.
