Job Description:

About the Role

MarketWatch is seeing an ambitious and intellectually curious Markets and Investing Reporter to help readers make sense of increasingly complex financial markets.

Retail investing has evolved dramatically over the past several decades. Individual investors are influencing markets through everything from traditional stock investing and options trading to digital assets and prediction markets. We’re looking for a reporter who wants to understand not only what investors are doing, but why, with an eye toward explaining what it means for millions of readers and MarketWatch subscribers.

You’ll cover fast-moving markets through the eyes of individual investors, breaking news, producing sharp analysis and developing original enterprise stories that uncover investing trends before they become obvious. Whether the story is about a new trading strategy, a regulatory change, or a shift in market structure, you’ll help readers understand how it affects their money and what they should watch next.

We’re looking for someone who is endlessly fascinated by how individual investors think, invest and react. But translating that curiosity into compelling, unique and high-caliber journalism that converts readers into smarter more confident investors.

You Will
  • Cover breaking developments across financial markets with urgency, accuracy and context.
  • Explain market moves, economic data and geopolitical developments in language that is accessible to a broad investing audience.
  • Break news and develop enterprise stories uncover investing trends before they become widely recognized.
  • Become deeply embedded in the retail investing community to understand emerging trends, evolving trading behavior and the most pressing individual investing questions.
  • Cultivate relationships with traders, portfolio managers, strategists, economists, academics, regulators and individual investors to generate original reporting.
  • Explain how developments in market structure — from options activity and exchange rules to new trading platforms and investing products — affect individual investors.
  • Track innovations in investing, including digital assets, prediction markets, brokerage platforms and new investment products, helping readers distinguish meaningful developments from short-lived hype.
  • Use market data, charts and public filings to identify trends, support reporting and communicate complex ideas clearly.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the newsroom to produce impactful journalism.
  • Pitch creative story ideas across multiple timelines, from breaking news to ambitious enterprise reporting.
  • Experience with podcasting or video storytelling is a plus.
You Have
  • 3-5 years experience covering financial markets, investing or business journalism.
  • Strong knowledge of financial markets, investing products, market structure and macroeconomic concepts.
  • Excellent news judgment and an ability to identify distinctive story angles from market movements, economic data, research and public reports.
  • A proven ability to explain sophisticated financial concepts in clear, engaging language for everyday investors and readers.
  • Experience developing sources across Wall Street, academia, government, financial services and the investing community.
  • A habit of connecting seemingly unrelated developments into meaningful and credible stories that help our subscribers make smarter decisions.
  • Excellent writing skills, meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to rigorous, reader-first journalism.

Why This Role Matters

Markets have never been simultaneously more accessible and more complicated.

Millions of Americans are taking greater control of their financial futures, navigating sometimes tumultuous markets filled with promise and potential pitfalls. At the same time, market-moving events unfold around the clock, often leaving investors struggling to separate meaningful developments from noise.

Your role is to help our readers translate the forces shaping markets into clear, insightful journalism that helps them make more confident financial decisions.

What success looks like

Success in this role is measured by your ability to help readers understand financial markets and take smarter actions.

Within your first year, you'll become a trusted voice on the retail investing beat by consistently breaking news, producing original enterprise, developing a deep network of sources and uncovering trends before they become old news. You’ll build enterprise expertise in how individual investors think, invest and react, while translating complex market happenings into journalism that is timely accessible and indispensable to readers.
