Job Description
NBCUniversal has an opening for a Support Engineer, in the Operations and Technology group in Centennial Colorado. The Support Engineer will be part of a dedicated 24x7 team tasked with supporting and maintaining our Dry Creek Operations Center, including immediately addressing on-air and critical issues as they arise.
Responsibilities
- Responding to outage calls from operations team and leading initial response to any technical issues
- Working with internal subject matter experts and vendors to resolve problems
- Implementing software upgrades and system expansion
- Analyzing problems in software- and hardware-based systems
- Performance analysis and general system health checks across various technologies
- Performing periodic maintenance procedures and proactive preventive maintenance actions
- Developing the skills to become a subject matter expert for a collection of technologies within and across facilities
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
- Ability to analyze and troubleshoot complex systems
- Demonstrated ability to effectively apply SDI, IP and TS test equipment and analysis tools
- Demonstrated ability to document complex systems and processes, including the development of maintenance and change procedures
- Ability to communicate processes and requirements to peers and off-site resources, including personnel at remote NBCUniversal sites, stations and vendors
- Effective interpersonal skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Customer focused and forward thinking
- BS in Engineering/Computer Science or equivalent professional experience
- 2+ years of support in in a live on-air environment
- Knowledge in the following areas
- On-air and/or NOC operating environments
- Video transmission and compression formats and systems, including, but not limited to, SDI, ASI, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, SMPTE-2110
- Video stream meta data, including, but not limited to, DTMF triggers, timecode user bits, SCTE-35 and -104 triggers, Closed Captioning, Nielsen watermarking
- Automation and control signaling protocols and systems including, but not limited to, serial, GPIO, VGPI, SNMP
- Video synchronization techniques and systems including, but not limited to, NTSC reference, SMPTE-12M timecode, Network Time Protocol and Precision Time Protocol
- IP-based connectivity, routing and switching including, but not limited to, routers, switches, firewalls, Cisco DCM, Nevion
- Single- and multi-view display systems and technology
- Proprietary monitor and control systems, preferably Evertz VistaLink and Grass Valley iControl
- Enterprise computing infrastructure (e.g., enterprise servers, client server, storage devices and systems, hardware and software) as applied to the provisioning, management, storage, operation, scheduling, support and maintenance of the infrastructure
- Desktop, server and VM technology
- Storage technology, including SAN, NAS, RAID and Cloud
- Broadcast automation systems, preferably Grass Valley Morpheus
- SDI and IP video routing systems and their control, preferably GV nVision series, Evertz EQX, EXE, SDVN and Magnum
Desired Characteristics
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
- VMware VCA/VCP certification
- CCNA/CCNP certification
- The ideal candidate would have experience with the following technologies:
- IP Networking/Multicasting
- Streaming Media Protocols (RTP, RTSP, UDP)
- Network and storage infrastructure (Switches, Routers, SANs, DCM, etc.)
- Virtualization technologies such as VMware ESXi
- Master Control Automation Systems such as Grass Valley Morpheus
- Uncompressed and compressed video formats (SDI, SMPTE 2110, H.264, JPEG2000)
- Video Server Systems (Grass Valley ICE, DVS)
- Transmission Encoding/Decoding Systems (Synamedia, Omneon, Evertz, MediaKind, Zixi)
- Management and Control Software (Vistalink, iControl, Convergent)
- IT Systems such as Servers, Workstations, Databases
- SDI Video Distribution (Routers, Frame Syncs)
- Basic and advanced test equipment, such as waveform monitors and transport stream analyzers
- Experience with software development, failure prediction, cloud-based video playout or big data a plus
