Check is leading a revolution in the payroll industry. Payroll is the backbone of the US economy, and yet it has not undergone significant innovation in decades. We invented the embedded payroll space to change that (see: Check: Solving the $150 Billion Payroll Problem, Bank On It; Episode 438), both for the business owners who spend countless hours per week running payroll and for the millions of Americans who depend on their next paycheck. At Check, our mission is to empower the most innovative software platforms to create new payroll businesses, and enable those businesses to transform the way companies pay their employees.

Check’s culture is intensely caring: to each other as teammates, to our partners, and to the businesses and workers we serve. Our teams are made up of creative problem solvers and empathetic cross-functional collaborators who can simplify the complexities of payroll. We bring hustle and grit to our day-to-day, while building enduring solutions and relationships.

Talent is our highest investment and our people drive our long-term growth and success. The People team at Check is dedicated to fostering an engaged, high-performing workforce. We aim to create a diverse and equitable workplace where every Checketeer is celebrated, supported, and valued for their contributions.

The People Operations Partner leads the charge in cultivating a thriving workplace culture at Check, reporting to and collaborating closely with the Head of People to guide team members through every stage of the employee lifecycle. Responsibilities include enhancing the employee experience through engagement initiatives, managing recognition and compensation programs, and ensuring discoverability and resource access. Additionally, you'll drive Check's growth by optimizing internal systems and policies and advocating for evolving workforce needs. This role partners with the Head of People in San Francisco and supports our New York headquarters, requiring a minimum of 2 days per week in-office, with flexibility for more as needed.

In this role, you will:

  • Ensure the integrity and efficacy of our existing HR tools, including our HRIS, native payroll platform, benefits, and LOA administration tools, and our L&D, performance, and engagement platforms.
  • Continually optimize People tooling and programs to support Check’s evolving needs, through projects such as migrating our HRIS, building out support for international team members, or implementing net new tools and platforms.
  • Champion best-in-class employee onboarding and offboarding experiences, and support our team members through other employee lifecycles milestones such as role transitions and leaves of absence.
  • Lead weekly payroll administration and partner with internal operations and R&D teams to ensure excellent ongoing service delivery for our team; contribute to product excellence by advocating for features and functionalities that benefit our partners.
  • Own our benefits programs, funding strategy, and annual open enrollment process; partner with our external brokers to lead ongoing employee benefits enrollment and administration.
  • Elevate team engagement and experience through in-office support in our NY headquarters and coordination of in-person company events (like our annual retreat in Mexico!); organize team recognition opportunities and group celebrations of company milestones, and ensure that fun and whimsy are part of our everyday way of working.
  • Ensure team members have access to the information, support, and resources needed to grow and succeed in their roles and careers; build policies and documentation to enable self-directed learning and development, and equip managers to lead effective teams.
  • Collaborate with external counsel to lead immigration support for our team, including sponsorship for H-1B and TN visas, and green card applications.
  • Support the Head of People, Security, Finance, and Legal teams on internal compliance programs and initiatives.
  • Assist the Head of People by flexing into HRBP responsibilities as needed, such as by conducting listening tours, coaching managers, or leading performance calibration discussions.
  • Ensure that diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are woven into the fabric of Check’s people policies, programs, and processes.

Many backgrounds could fit this role, but ideal candidates will have some or all of the following:

  • 5+ years of relevant People/HR experience in a startup environment
  • Proven success in building and optimizing systems and processes through multiple company growth stages
  • Fluency in HR technology trends and best practices; thorough understanding of HR regulations and employment law, especially within NY and CA
  • Polished communication, content design, and presentation skills - you know how to cut through the noise and get your point across
  • A results-oriented growth mindset - you are unafraid of taking risks to make a big impact
  • Willingness and ability to work onsite in Check’s NY office at least 2 days per week
  • Travel to our San Francisco office 1-2 times per year

How does the company support your career growth?

At Check, I feel supported in my career growth with a professional development budget and regular career check-ins! What is your vision for the company?

We believe in a future where business owners don’t have to think about payroll; it’ll simply be embedded in the platforms they already use to run their businesses.
