About the Role:
The Process Engineer will join our Innovation team and serve as the critical bridge between the Formulation team and contract manufacturing partners. This person will work closely with formulators from early development through commercial production, developing a deep understanding of each product's ingredients, specifications, and performance claims, then translating that knowledge into practical, scalable manufacturing solutions.
Day-to-day, the Process Engineer will identify opportunities to optimize formulas for manufacturability without compromising quality or efficacy, evaluate excipients and processing aids, and build a strong command of the equipment capabilities and constraints across the contract manufacturing network. When challenges arise during scale-up, validation, or production, this person will be responsible for troubleshooting and finding solutions that work on the floor.
This is a highly cross-functional role. The Process Engineer will collaborate regularly with Formulation, Quality, Operations, Procurement, and Contract Manufacturing teams, and the ability to align diverse stakeholders around practical, balanced decisions will be just as important as technical expertise.
The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience with both powder and liquid formulations, a background in household cleaning, personal care, or a related consumer products category, and a track record of successfully navigating the scale-up process from bench to commercial production. This role reports to the Chief Innovation Officer.
Responsibilities:
- Partner closely with the Formulation team during development to fully understand each formula, including functional ingredients, excipients, specifications, and product claims.
- Identify formulation “levers” that can be adjusted to improve manufacturability while maintaining product performance, quality, specifications, and claims.
- Understand the equipment, capabilities, and limitations of each contract manufacturer to ensure formulas are designed for successful production.
- Evaluate excipients and processing aids that may improve manufacturing efficiency, flowability, mixing, filling, stability, or overall process robustness.
- Translate formulation requirements into practical manufacturing guidance for powders and liquids.
- Support troubleshooting during scale-up, validation, and commercial production.
- Work cross-functionally with Formulation, Quality, Operations, Procurement, and Contract Manufacturing teams to resolve process and formula-related challenges.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related technical field preferred.
- Experience working as a Process Engineer with powder and liquid formulations.
- Background in household cleaning, personal care, or adjacent consumer products preferred.
- Strong understanding of formulation, scale-up, and manufacturing processes.
- Ability to assess contract manufacturer equipment capabilities and limitations.
- Experience troubleshooting production issues and recommending practical formula or process adjustments.
- Knowledge of excipients, processing aids, and raw materials that support manufacturability.
- Comfortable balancing manufacturability, product claims, specifications, quality, and cost.
Location & Travel:
- Remote, full-time position with candidates ideally in the Midwest or Mountain regions.
- This role requires frequent (60-80%) travel to contract manufacturing sites.
The salary range for this position is $110,00 - 140,000 per year.
