Prototype Studio Manager (Packaging & Product Prototyping – NYC)
Overview
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Prototype Studio Manager to lead client-facing operations and manage end-to-end projects in the packaging and prototyping space. This role combines strong project management, packaging design knowledge, estimating expertise, and client communication skills to ensure successful delivery from concept through final prototype.
The ideal candidate will work closely with clients, designers, engineers, and production teams to deliver high-quality packaging prototypes and structural mockups that meet both functional and aesthetic requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary client point of contact, leading kickoff meetings, status updates, design reviews, and project handoffs
- Translate client requirements into clear project briefs, timelines, and execution plans
- Manage full project lifecycle including scope, schedule, budget, and risk mitigation
- Oversee prototype development workflows, ensuring functional, structural, and visual requirements are met
- Coordinate with vendors, suppliers, and production partners for prototyping and materials sourcing
- Review packaging artwork, dielines, materials, and construction methods for manufacturability and cost efficiency
- Provide guidance on design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-packaging (DFP) best practices
- Build and maintain accurate project estimates for prototypes, tooling, and packaging production
- Track budget performance, actual vs. estimated costs, and contingency planning
- Enforce quality assurance (QA/QC), safety, and sustainability standards
- Maintain data confidentiality and uphold professional client service standards
- Identify and implement process improvements and workflow efficiencies
- Mentor junior team members and support development of best practices in prototyping and project management
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in packaging, prototyping, product development, or related industries
- Prior experience in project management (PM/PMO experience preferred)
- Basic proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat)
- Strong skills in Microsoft Excel and estimating tools (including enterprise systems if applicable)
- Understanding of offset, flexographic, and other print production technologies
- Ability to create, manage, and share PDF files and design documentation efficiently
- Strong background in estimating, budgeting, and cost modeling
- Familiarity with packaging workflows, structural prototyping, and production processes
- Excellent communication, organization, and stakeholder management skills
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Industrial Design, Packaging Design, Engineering, or Project Management
