The Fortune Society, Inc. (Fortune) has been working for over 57 years in service to our mission: to support successful reentry from incarceration and promote alternatives to incarceration, thus strengthening the fabric of our communities. The organization has evolved into one of the nation’s preeminent reentry and justice-informed service organizations, providing formerly incarcerated people with the skills and wrap-around services needed to break the cycle of crime and incarceration and to build productive lives in their communities.  


Fortune has grown steadily over the years to an agency with over $90 million in annual budget and approximately 600 staff. We anticipate that we will keep growing, both in size and depth of service. Fortune has a dual mission: both advocacy and service. The advocacy portion of our mission focuses on building a more just criminal legal system and reducing the barriers to reentry into society. The service side of Fortune has evolved to encompass a broad range of programs that started with employment and education and now includes a robust array of services, among them: alternatives to incarceration, supervised release, court advocacy, discharge planning within correctional facilities, licensed substance use and mental health treatment, a housing continuum ranging from emergency and transitional through permanent congregate and scattered site housing, assistance in obtaining benefits, a care management unit, HIV services, a food and nutrition program, and an arts program. Each service we provide is informed by the needs of the population we serve. Fortune currently serves approximately 18,000 people a year. Our program models are recognized, both nationally and internationally, for their quality and innovation. We have locations in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens. 



Position Summary: 

The Manager of Recruitment oversees The Fortune Society’s recruitment and onboarding process for approximately 150 new hires annually. This role partners closely with hiring managers to identify recruitment needs.  The Manager of Recruitment ensures a stellar candidate experience reflective of Fortune’s mission.

Recruitment and Onboarding Experience: Experience managing the recruitment and onboarding process at a mission-based non-profit, including an understanding of relationship building.  


Strong Communication & Relationship Building: Ability to clearly convey information, listen actively, and build positive, trust-based relationships with hiring managers and potential employees. 


Time Management, Organization and Problem Solving: Demonstrates meticulous organization skills and strong time management skills, maintaining accurate records while meeting deadlines.  Approaches challenges with a solution-oriented mindset and does not shy away from addressing issues as they arise. Demonstrates ability to assess situations and escalate concerns appropriately with professionalism and respect for all parties involved.  


Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 


  • Partner with hiring managers across the agency to identify recruitments needs.  As new programs come on board work with program leads to support recruitment; 

  • Ensure that job postings and offers are in line with agency guidelines and practices; 

  • Review Requisition paperwork for compliance and prepare position for posting; 

  • Own end-to-end prehire process, including job offers, required background screenings; 

  • Review hiring documentation for accuracy, as well as work closely with our finance team for vacancy and allocation confirmation;  

  • Maintains consistent communication with candidates and hiring managers to ensure a smooth hiring process; 

  • Coordinate with Learning and Development Team for seamless Orientation of new staff; 

  • When needed, participate in the Fair Chance process with candidates or employees; 

  • Maintain data accuracy, reporting, dashboards, and other recruitment metrics;  

  • Regularly trains hiring managers on the recruitment processes, including best practices in writing job descriptions, reviewing resumes and interviews.  As needed create materials to help hiring managers with the recruitment process; 

  • Partner with the Director of Recruitment and Retention on onboarding strategies and experience enhancements for hires; 

  • Assists AVP of Human Resources in various HR related projects and initiatives as needed; 

  • Manage Fortune's Internal Job Application process and Employee Referral Program; 

  • Perform other duties as assigned 


Qualifications

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience; 

  • 3 or more years of experience managing recruitment process at a non-profit organization; 

  • Working knowledge of NYS Justice Center background check processes, a plus; 

  • Knowledge of the Fair Chance Process, a plus; 

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook; 

  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and relationship-building skills across diverse audiences; 

  • Strong organizational, attention to detail and time management skills and urgency 

  • Ability to work independently while adapting to changing priorities; 

  • Good judgment and ability to maintain confidentiality; 

  • Detail oriented, self-motivated and resourceful; 

  • A sense of humor, a plus;

  • Ability to travel citywide
