Position Overview

The Department of Radiology and Imaging at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is seeking a Research Engineer to join its growing technology development team. This is an entry-level engineering position intended for early-career physicists and engineers who want hands-on experience translating quantitative research methods into working software, data pipelines, and prototype tools. Working under the guidance of more senior research engineers, MRI physicists, and radiologists, you will support technology development projects spanning the full range of radiology research, across MRI, CT, ultrasound, and other imaging modalities. The role is designed as a feeder position into more senior research engineering and software development roles within Radiology and other HSS digital technology development initiatives with substantial mentorship and structured growth built in.

  • Integrate developed technologies into imaging scanners and informatics infrastructure to facilitate real-world evaluation
  • Assist with documentation, code review, and basic quality assurance for research software tools
  • Contribute to prototyping of new measurement, modeling, or visualization tools under the guidance of senior team members
  • Support data collection activities as needed, which may include assisting with imaging scanning protocols and patient research procedures
  • Participate in team meetings and provide technical updates on assigned projects
  • Learn and apply foundational concepts in medical imaging physics and clinical radiology relevant to ongoing projects across modalities

Required Qualifications

  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git)
  • Coursework or research experience advanced engineering or applied physics
  • Familiarity with scientific computing and technical writing tools (e.g., LaTeX)
  • Experience working with biological, medical, or clinical research data

Work Environment

Based in the Department of Radiology and Imaging, this position offers close day-to-day collaboration with research software engineers, MRI physicists, radiologists, and the broader HSS Institute for Technology Development team. You will work in a highly collaborative, fast-paced research environment at the intersection of physics, engineering, and medicine, with direct exposure to clinical imaging data and ongoing translational research programs.

How You’ll Make an Impact

As an entry point into translational imaging research, this role offers the opportunity to build foundational engineering skills while directly contributing to active radiology research and technology development programs across modalities. You will receive mentorship from senior engineers, MRI physicists, and radiologists, with a clear path for growth into more senior research engineering and software development roles within the department.
