Design and develop automation systems for materials science research, collaborating with teams to integrate robotics and software systems for enhanced R&D efficiency.
Radical AI is replacing an R&D process that currently takes 10+ years and $100 million to produce a single discovery. Our self-driving lab platform combines AI with autonomous robotics to run experiments, analyze results, and iterate—continuously, without human bottlenecks. For industries like aerospace, automotive, defense, energy, manufacturing, semiconductors, and space, that means breakthroughs in weeks instead of years.
The opportunity
As a Software Engineer in the Robotics and Automation group at Radical AI, you will design and deploy systems to automate our material science research and discovery laboratory. You will specialize in robotics, automation, and perception software development.
Your experience and vision will shape both the physical and systematic implementation of lab automation. You will collaborate closely with Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering and Material Scientists to meet rigorous and sometimes dynamic design requirements at a profound deployment speed.
Mission
- Architect and develop software systems that control and orchestrate robotic workcells for autonomous materials experimentation
- Design scalable control frameworks for flexible automation involving robots, motion systems, sensors, and lab instruments
- Collaborate with hardware, mechatronics, and science teams to translate experimental workflows into reliable automated processes
- Build and maintain APIs and services for scheduling, execution, monitoring, and data capture
- Develop simulation, testing, and validation tools to accelerate development and ensure system reliability
- Integrate 2D and 3D vision systems (cameras, lighting, depth sensors) with robotic manipulation, motion planning, and execution
- Optimize system performance, robustness, and throughput under rapid iteration cycles
- Contribute to technical direction, architecture decisions, and best practices across the robotics, perception, and automation software stack
- Mentor junior engineers and help establish engineering standards in a fast-growing organization
- Bring an attitude of collaboration and open-mindedness, to facilitate fearless and creative problem solving skills that empowers our team to ship world class technology at an unprecedented speed.
