This role is four days onsite at our Seneca One Buffalo, NY location, with the flexibility to work from home one day per week

Overview:

Provide guidance on complex operational regulatory compliance risk management activities to first line operations teams to include production of materials for both internal and external exams, supporting the Bank’s governance, risk, and compliance processes for identifying, assessing, and translating applicable regulatory requirements into business practices, governance documentation, and internal controls, provide expertise and support for the business line, performing monitoring, and/or testing. Analyze various State and Federal regulations to determine the relevance to business lines.  Leverage risk management tools to enhance the organization’s risk awareness in order to facilitate improved decisions.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a primary consultant with managers of business units on business compliance matters
  • Maintain current knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, regulatory guidance, and supervisory expectations relevant to assigned areas of responsibility, including federal and state financial operational regulatory requirements (e.g., Internal Revenue Code, Treasury Regulations, unclaimed property regulations)
  • Manage the analysis and interpretation of Federal and State laws and regulations in conjunction with Compliance Risk Management and Legal to ensure consistency and actions consistent with M&T's risk appetite
  • Apply governance, risk, and compliance concepts, practices, and procedures including regulatory change management, risk and compliance assessments, and the development and maintenance of governance documentation
  • Support business line by providing technical compliance expertise in furthering business line initiatives, including the development and revamping of products, and resolving issues to ensure policies, procedures and controls result in material compliance.
  • Ensure all activities are appropriately vetted and approved by Compliance Risk Management, Legal, and Regulatory Affairs, as appropriate.
  • Oversee the integrity of current compliance policies and procedures by managing periodic operational risk/compliance reviews of the business line activities. 
  • Prepare and present updates and communication to various levels of management.
  • Escalate issues to management as appropriate
  • Adhere to applicable compliance/operational risk controls in accordance with Company or regulatory standards and policies.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and develop recommendations for management on strategies to enhance process efficiency, effectiveness, and sustainability. 
  • Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
  • Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Required:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.

Minimum five years’ relevant industry experience, to include one year of compliance experience. Demonstrated knowledge of risk management strategies and the financial industry  

Education and Experience Preferred:
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) preferred
  • Thorough technical operational risk/compliance knowledge.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Strong and proven ability to integrate sound compliance controls into business plans.
  • Strong analytical abilities and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work well with all levels of management. Must possess self-motivation and organizational skills.
  • Four years’ supervisory / work leadership experience preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail.                                                       
  • Four years’ departmental experience preferred. 
  • Solid working knowledge of personal computers and software utilized by the Division. 

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $89,600.00 - $149,300.00 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
