POSITION SUMMARY

CVS Health is seeking a Senior Data Scientist - GenAI to join the Lumina team, the organization behind CVS Health's enterprise knowledge and agentic AI platform. The Senior Data Scientist - GenAI will play a critical role in advancing the intelligence, scalability, reliability, and business impact of AI-powered experiences used across the enterprise. This position combines deep expertise in applied data science, machine learning, information retrieval, and Generative AI with strong software engineering capabilities to deliver production-grade solutions at scale. The Senior Data Scientist - GenAI will lead initiatives that improve how enterprise knowledge is discovered, interpreted, and utilized through advanced AI techniques, intelligent retrieval systems, and autonomous workflows. The Senior Data Scientist - GenAI will leverage experimentation, statistical methods, machine learning, and large language models to drive measurable improvements in relevance, accuracy, user satisfaction, and operational efficiency.

As a Senior Data Scientist - GenAI, you will contribute across the full lifecycle of AI product development, from research and prototyping through deployment, monitoring, optimization, and continuous innovation. The Senior Data Scientist - GenAI will collaborate closely with software engineers, platform engineers, architects, product managers, and business leaders to deliver enterprise-scale AI capabilities that solve complex business challenges and accelerate decision-making throughout CVS Health.

The Senior Data Scientist - GenAI will balance applied data science and machine learning responsibilities with hands-on software development, ensuring AI capabilities can be operationalized, integrated, measured, and continuously improved within production environments. Approximately two-thirds of the position focuses on applied data science, machine learning, Generative AI, experimentation, and AI evaluation, while one-third focuses on software engineering, platform integration, API development, and production implementation. Lumina is CVS Health's internal enterprise knowledge and agentic AI platform. It grounds AI responses in curated internal content while enforcing access controls through Azure Entra security groups. Lumina delivers capabilities through web applications, Slack, Microsoft Teams, embedded agents, APIs, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations. The platform also enables secure interoperability with enterprise systems including Jira, Confluence, GitHub, Figma, Airtable, Slack, and Microsoft 365.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • GenAI & Retrieval Systems: Design, build, and evaluate retrieval and generation components (embeddings, hybrid retrieval, reranking, prompting, agent behavior) for an enterprise RAG and agentic AI platform.
  • Evaluation & Applied ML: Develop and maintain evaluation methods for retrieval quality (e.g., Recall@k, MRR, nDCG) at scale and response quality (faithfulness, citation accuracy, abstention), using production traces and human validated judgments.
  • Data Analysis: Analyze usage, performance, and quality data to inform product and modeling decisions, and communicate findings to technical and business stakeholders.
  • Build Agents: Create and orchestrate agents to assist in the creation and automation of the platform, internal processes, and customer support. Help drive the team to create autonomous AI systems.
  • Software Development & Integration: Write production level code to integrate models and evaluation pipelines into the platform's agent orchestration, retrieval, and data layers, and to build supporting APIs and connectors (roughly 33% of the role).
  • Software Engineering: Experience building and deploying ML microservices; Testing: Unit testing, integration testing, contract testing; CI/CD: Automated testing and deployment pipelines
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 5+ years applying advanced data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, statistical modeling, and quantitative methods to solve complex business challenges in large-scale production environments.
  • 4+ years building and maintaining production-grade software, services, APIs, data pipelines, and application components using Python and modern engineering practices.
  • 3+ years leveraging AWS, Azure, or GCP to support scalable analytics, machine learning workloads, distributed applications, and cloud-native platforms.
  • 2+ years designing, deploying, and optimizing Generative AI, large language model (LLM), retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), agentic AI, or intelligent automation solutions within enterprise environments.
  • 1+ year establishing evaluation frameworks, experimentation methodologies, and performance measurement practices that drive measurable business outcomes and informed technology decisions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience supporting enterprise AI platforms with strong governance, security, scalability, reliability, and operational maturity requirements.
  • Experience implementing observability, AI quality measurement, performance monitoring, operational analytics, or continuous improvement capabilities for machine learning and Generative AI applications.
  • Familiarity with enterprise search, knowledge management, information discovery, content intelligence, or access-controlled information ecosystems.
  • Experience working within healthcare, regulated industries, or environments where privacy, compliance, risk management, and security controls are critical considerations.
  • Master's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative discipline.

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or equivalent work experience (High School Diploma/GED plus 4 years of relevant experience).
