Job Description:

The role is based in the NYC office and requires being in the office three days per week.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Our design team is currently seeking a Senior Designer to work closely with the Creative Director to produce high quality designs for the industry leading graphic novel imprint, Graphix. Our group works closely with Editorial on both middle grade (ages 8–12) and YA (ages 12 and up) graphic novels. The design of each graphic novel is all encompassing, including both cover and interiors. The candidate should have a keen eye for detail and extensive print design experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Design – Responsible for all design and production stages of graphic novel covers and interiors, initiating cover/interior ideas, finding talent, and staying current on the latest design trends, tools, and technologies. Ensures that design files meet the imprint's technical standards as defined by the Creative Director. Trusted to take on both lead and priority titles.

2. Collaboration – Collaborates with the Publisher, Creative Director, and colleagues in Editorial, Production, and Manufacturing to ensure clear communication throughout the book-making process, valuing the contributions of every team member, while maintaining a collegial attitude.

3. Project Management – Manages timelines, schedules, and deadlines while efficiently routing materials to colleagues in Editorial, Production, and Manufacturing for 5-8 title assignment per season. Ensures projects progress efficiently to completion, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while prioritizing tasks appropriately.

4. Problem Solving – Communicates project complications and proactively seeks strategies and solutions for successful project completion, streamlining processes when possible.

5. Budget Oversight – Manages project expenses within established budgets, keeping manager informed.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• 3–4 years of experience in the publishing industry, ideally with graphic novels

• Highly creative

• Excellent computer skills in relevant art/design software

• Experience designing for print and building files for print production

• Work within budgets

Experience and Education:

Experience: A minimum of 3 to 4 years design experience in publishing. Though not required, we would prefer that candidates have experience designing graphic novels.

Education: A Bachelor’s degree in design is preferred.
