Division/Program Summary:
The Bureau of Public Health Clinics (BPHC) mission is to promote a healthy community by providing New Yorkers with the resources needed to make informed and empowered health decisions; identify and
treat tuberculosis and provide immunization and sexual health services regardless of ability to pay or immigration status. BPHC provides direct clinic services to people seeking health care; monitors disease trends; provides education and training to service providers and community groups; conducts research; and develops policies and programs to deliver high-quality clinical care which best serve New Yorkers.
Position Summary:
The Laboratory Microbiologist II will report to the Limited Laboratory Director and supervise the Laboratory Associate II for both TB and STI clinics Limited laboratory and Phlebotomy staff.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- knowledge of and adherence to quality management and quality control and all testing and phlebotomy policies and procedures with documentation.
- Training and reviewing the work and documentation of LA II for Phlebotomy and Limited-Service Laboratory such as in EMR, laboratory logbooks and quality logs.
- Updating Limited laboratory and Phlebotomy procedures, as needed.
- Preparing the schedule of LA II and organizing coverage of LA II when someone calls out and for scheduled vacations.
- Performing internal proficiency, competency assessment and annual performance evaluation of LA II.
- Performing corrective action for unsatisfactory work of subordinates.
- Ensuring adequate inventory of clinic lab and phlebotomy supplies and monitoring expiration dates.
- Implementing adequate verification procedures for determining the accuracy, precision and/or other performance criteria for each test method/assay.
- Ensuring that proficiency testing samples are tested according to regulatory requirements and that the reports are submitted within the prescribed timeframe.
- Ensuring that test results are accurate, and reports include pertinent information for appropriate interpretation.
- Ensuring adherence to QM policies and procedures by LA II and bench staff.
- Monitoring Quality Control as it relates to testing and non-conformance events.
- Documenting any deviations from established policies/protocols such as non-conformance and AIRS reports.
- Formulating and documenting any necessary corrective action plans, implementing and following up on those actions to ensure their effectiveness and adherence to established policies and protocols.
- Signing off on required documentation.
- Schedule and lead regular supervisor and lab staff meetings.
- Assists supervisor with other appropriate tasks or projects, as needed.

LABORATORY MICROBIOLOGIST - 21513

Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional, or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) with a major in the biological, chemical, or physical sciences or medical technology, and one year of experience as a microbiologist performing at the technician or higher level in a clinical or environmental laboratory setting; or
2. An associate degree in medical technology, or sixty college credits from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional, or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) including six credits in mathematics and six credits in either chemistry or biology
and three years of experience as described in “1” above; or
3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization plus any combination of college education and experience described in “1" or “2” above to make up the equivalent of five years of education and experience. One year of experience credit will be given for each 30 semester credits of college education which includes at least 3 credits in mathematics and at least 3 credits in either chemistry or biology. However, all candidates must have at least one year of acceptable experience as described in “1” above.
