Senior Manager of Research Engineering, TR Labs

Are you excited about the future of AI technology? Are you passionate about delivering value and maximizing the impact of R&D investment? Thomson Reuters Labs is seeking a hands-on engineering manager to guide the delivery of cutting-edge AI solutions from concept to production. 

At Thomson Reuters Labs, we experiment, we build, we deliver. We support the organization and our customers through applied research in informational retrieval and natural language processing. We work closely with product and domain experts to identify compelling solutions at the intersection of user need and technical feasibility. Our team is responsible for AI innovation across Thomson Reuters’ Research Products, including Westlaw, Practical Law, and Checkpoint

As Manager of Research Engineering, you are both a technical leader and a people manager. Key responsibilities include the technical direction of production services, close partnership with technology partners across the enterprise, and responsibility for the recruiting, career growth and mentorship of Labs engineers. Managers provide technical guidance on medium, yet complex projects in close collaboration with the research arm of Labs. This role also identifies and collaboratively advocates for the adoption of industry best practices around well-managed software delivery.

In this opportunity as Senior Manager of Research Engineering, you will:

  • Promote efficient collaboration between scientists and engineers on a project basis   

  • Operate with urgency and manage change at a rapid pace 

  • Coach engineering leads within the team 

About You 
You're a fit for the role of Senior Manager of Research Engineering if your background includes: 

  • A bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, or the equivalent. Master’s or PhD in a relevant specialization preferred. 

  • Minimum of 7 years' software development experience, with the demonstrated ability to successfully manage software development teams in an agile environment  

  • Experience spearheading technical development in a cross-functional setting, with responsibility for ML applications; close partnership with Applied Scientists, R&D groups, or similar. 

  • A portfolio showcasing significant contributions to technology innovation 

  • Excellent project management, organization and communication skills 

  • Experience contributing to and overseeing large-scale rollouts and infrastructure initiatives. 

  • Expertise in several of the following areas: robust python development, MLOps, containerization, cloud infrastructure (AWS and Azure), advanced search and recommendation technology, orchestration of ML pipelines for real-time inference, microservices architecture, model monitoring and governance.

Thomson Reuters complies with local laws that require upfront disclosure of the expected pay range for a position. The base compensation range varies across locations. Eligible office location(s) for this role include one or more of the following: New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and/or Irvine, CA; McLean, VA; Washington, DC. The base compensation range for the role in any of those locations is $183,100 USD - $340,000 USD. Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity. Base pay is one part of a comprehensive Total Reward program which also includes flexible and supportive benefits and other wellbeing programs. This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance.
