The work is ambitious, the bar is high, and the opportunity for growth — personal, professional, and financial — is unmatched.

Our team is sharp, motivated, and deeply committed to the mission. We move fast, operate with intensity, and take real ownership of the problems we tackle — from early thinking to long-term outcomes. We stay close to our customers — from leadership to engineers — and work together to solve real problems with urgency and care. If you thrive in ambiguity, push for excellence, and want to help shape the future of work alongside others who raise the bar, we invite you to build with us.

At Harvey, the future of professional services is being written today — and we’re just getting started.

Role Overview

We’re hiring a Senior Software Engineer, New Verticals to build new products and capabilities for the legal industry from first principles.

This is a deeply technical, end-to-end engineering role for someone who is excited to own ambiguous, high-leverage problems across the full stack. You will work on greenfield and early-stage product areas that span user-facing applications, backend services, data systems, document and knowledge pipelines, and agentic workflows. Depending on the problem, that may mean building production frontend experiences, designing APIs and services, modeling data, standing up ETL pipelines, improving retrieval and evaluation loops, orchestrating long-running agents, or shipping platform capabilities that make entirely new solution categories possible.

You will partner closely with customers, product, design, and other engineers to understand complex legal workflows and translate them into robust, scalable software. The goal is not just to deliver custom solutions, but to identify repeatable patterns and turn them into durable product and platform capabilities that can define new verticals for Harvey.

This role is hybrid, based in New York, NY and offers relocation assistance.

How You Will Make a 10x Impact

High Beta: You understand that ambiguity and volatility are part of building new products. You can move from undefined problem spaces to concrete technical plans, test assumptions quickly, and adjust without attachment when the evidence changes.

Customer-Driven Engineering: You ground technical decisions in real user problems. You are excited to work directly with customers and internal partners, understand complex workflows in detail, and build systems that solve practical, high-value problems in production.

Relentless Builder Mentality: You have a strong bias toward shipping. You know how to balance speed and rigor, and you are comfortable building the first version, learning from usage, and then improving architecture, reliability, and scale over time.

Strong Technical Judgment: You can navigate tradeoffs across product, infrastructure, and data. You know when to invest in abstractions, when to keep things simple, and how to make systems that are both pragmatic in the short term and durable in the long term.

What You'll Do
  • Design and build production systems end-to-end across frontend applications, backend services, APIs, data models, and developer tooling.

  • Develop new vertical product capabilities involving document ingestion, workflow orchestration, retrieval, structured outputs, agent frameworks, and human-in-the-loop review flows.

  • Build and operate data-intensive systems, including ETL pipelines, analytical data models, serving layers, and interfaces for querying and exploring large datasets.

  • Work across a modern technical stack that may include Python, TypeScript, SQL, cloud infrastructure, agent orchestration engines, data processing platforms, and analytical databases.

  • Define service boundaries, schema design, and system architecture for new product areas with an emphasis on reliability, extensibility, and speed of iteration.

  • Ship customer-facing features quickly, then harden them for scale through observability, testing, performance tuning, and operational excellence.

  • Partner directly with customers and internal stakeholders to understand domain-specific workflows, map requirements into technical designs, and iterate rapidly on real usage.

  • Build evaluation, monitoring, and feedback systems that measure product quality in production and inform engineering and model decisions.

  • Contribute reusable platform patterns, abstractions, and internal tools so successful solutions can scale across customers and verticals.

  • Help drive technical direction in ambiguous spaces, making strong engineering decisions with incomplete information and a high degree of ownership.

What You Have
  • 8+ years of experience building and operating production software, with meaningful ownership of systems from initial concept through launch and iteration.

  • Strong engineering fundamentals across backend systems, APIs, data modeling, and exposure to at least one modern frontend stack.

  • Experience building full-stack products, not just isolated services or UI layers.

  • Experience working with data pipelines, analytical systems, or document-heavy workflows, including schema design, ETL, query performance, and data reliability.

  • Experience building AI-powered or workflow-driven applications, such as retrieval systems, agentic workflows, orchestration layers, evaluation pipelines, or structured generation systems.

  • Comfort working across a broad technical surface area, including application code, infrastructure, databases, observability, and internal tooling.

  • Ability to debug and improve complex production systems using logs, metrics, traces, dashboards, and strong engineering intuition.

  • Strong product sense and the ability to translate ambiguous business or user needs into thoughtful technical designs.

  • Comfort partnering directly with customers and cross-functional teams to scope problems, validate solutions, and drive adoption.

  • Clear, concise communication, a low-ego working style, and enthusiasm for collaborating in person with teammates in New York.

Compensation Range

$260,000-$310,000 USD
