About the Role
Ontra is seeking a Staff Software Engineer reporting to our Director of Engineering.
To foster team connection and collaboration, this role requires being present in either our Santa Barbara or San Francisco office up to once per quarter for team meetings and off-sites. As such, we are only considering candidates who are currently based in California.
This role is a great opportunity for someone who is passionate about tackling complex technical challenges, architecting robust and scalable systems, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. This position is ideal for those who enjoy driving project direction and fostering an environment of continuous improvement. This person will be instrumental in designing resilient and scalable systems that underpin multiple product lines and internal processes. This includes architecting APIs, data models, and infrastructure to be consumed by various teams across the organization. A successful hire will also be involved in ensuring the reliability, performance, and maintainability of these critical shared services.

What You’ll Do
- Exploration: Play a crucial role in helping Ontra explore and prototype solutions. Contribute to discovering new solutions to problems.
- Contribute to Engineering Culture: Provide engineering prospective and help set engineering best practices.
- Set Technical Direction: Speak for Ontra's technology and engineering culture. Take a long term and pragmatic view of technological progress and how to maintain Ontra's technology stack.
- Be The Glue: Help teams by doing the invisible and unneeded tasks needed to effectively ship software and proactively spot risks.
What You’ll Bring
- Expertise: 10+ years in software engineering, 6+ years developing in Ruby on Rails, and 3+ years with React.
- Results-driven approach: Proven experience delivering features and solutions that have a direct impact on revenue growth, savings, or operational efficiencies.
- Problem Solving Skills: Ability to tackle complex technical problems with creativity and efficiency.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication across technical and non-technical team members and stakeholders.

Ontra takes individual candidate location, experience, and skills into consideration when determining compensation. The base pay range is listed below.
Some positions may be eligible for additional compensation, such as commission, variable compensation, profits interest units, or other equity-based compensation, which are not included in the below base pay range.
