Summer Associate - Governance, Info Security, Risk & Compliance

Purpose: Five Star Bank’s Summer Associate Program is designed to develop the next generation of financial services professionals to help us advance our vision of being an independent, high-performing community bank. Our Governance, Risk & Compliance Program offers hands-on experience across several dynamic areas including Compliance, Risk, BSA/AML, Information Security, Internal Audit and Fraud. This internship provides a valuable opportunity to gain exposure to risk management frameworks, compliance monitoring, and governance processes within a community bank environment.   

What You’ll Do: Depending on your area of focus, you may: 

• Compliance: A Compliance Summer Associate supports the organization's compliance program by assisting with regulatory testing, monitoring, and oversight activities to help ensure adherence to applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies. This role helps evaluate compliance controls, document findings, support risk assessments, and contribute to initiatives that promote ethical conduct, regulatory compliance, and operational integrity across the organization.
• Enterprise Risk: An enterprise risk summer associate supports the identification, assessment, and monitoring of financial, operational, and regulatory risks by assisting with data analysis, third-party risk reviews, and reporting to strengthen internal controls.
• BSA/AML: A BSA/AML summer associate assists in monitoring financial transactions for suspicious activity, supports the preparation of reports such as Suspicious Activity Report (SAR), and helps ensure adherence to anti-money laundering regulations and internal controls.
• Fraud: A fraud summer associate assists in detecting and investigating suspicious transactions, supports the implementation of fraud prevention strategies, and helps maintain accurate records to safeguard customer assets and uphold regulatory compliance.
• Internal Audit: An Internal Audit summer associate partners with the Internal Audit team to evaluate risk management, internal controls, and operational processes across the bank, gaining exposure to audit testing, regulatory requirements, and banking operations within a community banking environment.
• Through this posting, we are recruiting candidates for a variety of Summer Internship opportunities within our Risk Management division, including BSA/AML, Fraud, Compliance, Internal Audit, Risk, Information Security, and other related functions.

What We’re Looking For:

• Currently pursuing a degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Law, Cybersecurity or a related field, with a junior-level standing or higher preferred. 
• Candidates must be available to work a hybrid work model, 40 hours per week for the duration of the program starting in June.
• Occasional travel within corporate footprint (Buffalo and Rochester) will also be required. 
• At least 1 year in one or more club(s), volunteerism efforts, or other activities outside of the classroom
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
• Interest in governance, risk management, compliance, or regulatory affairs
• Self-starter with a collaborative mindset and attention to detail
• Curiosity, initiative, and a desire to learn in a fast-paced environment.
• Demonstrate the standards and principles of the Five Star Bank experience in every interaction with internal customers, associates, and stakeholders. Incorporate the high-performance behaviors of teamwork, leading by example and serve in every facet of work.

The expected rate of pay for this position is shown above.   Compensation offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education and, where applicable, licenses or certifications obtained.   Market and organizational factors are also considered.  In addition to your base rate of pay and a competitive benefits package, successful candidates may be eligible to receive cash or equity-based incentives based on the role and performance.
