GEICO is seeking a Technology, AI and Innovation Attorney – Assistant General Counsel/Director to join our legal team within the Law, Policy and Compliance department.  This position will focus primarily on advising on technology and AI models, platforms, products and initiatives, including initiatives involving Agentic AI and other innovative technologies.  The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of the laws and regulations impacting technology, digital and AI initiatives, as well as consumer and data protection, and will be responsible for providing advice and guidance to the technology and product teams, compliance, legal colleagues and stakeholders throughout the company.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Advise on legal and regulatory considerations across the technology product and AI system/model lifecycle.

  • Partner with internal clients and others in Law, Policy and Compliance to provide advice related to the development, implementation, and ongoing monitoring of technology and AI initiatives, products, services, and processes.

  • Assist the technology and product teams with the identification and mitigation of legal and regulatory risks and considerations, including those related to artificial intelligence, innovative technologies, privacy, data and consumer protection.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of technology-related policies, procedures, processes and training programs.

  • Advise on GEICO’s AI governance framework.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to evaluate potential legal risks related to technology, artificial intelligence and innovative technologies and provide practical solutions for sales, underwriting, marketing, technology, business operations, claims teams and corporate functions.

  • Monitor technology and AI-related legislative and regulatory changes; analyze and advise on potential impact to the organization and advise on advocacy opportunities.

  • Provide thought leadership and training on AI risk management and responsible AI use.

  • Support Supplier Management with legal issues related to vendor onboarding and oversight of technology partners.

  • Advise technology and product teams on all legal aspects of technology vendor relationships, including the interpretation of vendor contract provisions.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

  • Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.

  • 10+ years of experience practicing law, including at least 5 years focused on technology and AI matters, in house or at a law firm. 

  • Understanding of U.S. federal and state laws impacting technology, digitalization, artificial intelligence, and innovation initiatives, as well as data protection laws and information use laws.

  • Familiarity with AI governance frameworks and emerging AI/insurance regulatory requirements (e.g., NIST AI Risk Management Framework, EU AI Act, NAIC Model AI Bulletin, etc.)

  • Demonstrated ability to partner effectively across Legal, Compliance, Technology, and Business teams.

  • Strong understanding of the technical aspects and related risks of technology and AI, and ability to communicate with both business units and Technology engineers.

  • Interest and focus on continuous learning about artificial intelligence and innovative technologies.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Excellent written, research, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts to non-lawyers.

  • Prior technology transactional experience preferred.

  • Experience in insurance, financial services, or another highly regulated industry preferred.

  • Proven ability to balance legal risk and business objectives.

  • Proficiency in proactively managing multiple priorities, projects, and stakeholders

Location – Hybrid: This position is a hybrid role and will require 3 days working onsite in the Bethesda, MD, New York, NY, or Cleveland, OH office.


 

Annual Salary

$159,900.00 - $280,850.00

The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
