Title and Summary

Vice President, Public Sector Emerging Verticals, Business Development

Overview:
At the core of Mastercard’s ethos of “doing well by doing good” is our work with governments, nonprofits, education partners, and transit agencies. The U.S. Public Sector team is responsible for those critical partnerships at the federal, state, and local level. We bring the best of Mastercard – our products, partnerships, and people – to help our public sector customers work harder, better, faster, smarter for their constituents. This includes helping governments disburse benefits and emergency relief through our prepaid offerings; powering university procurement and travel through commercial cards; enabling nonprofits to optimize their impact through data and insights; and much more.
The Vice President of Public Sector Emerging Verticals will be responsible for growing Mastercard’s business in underpenetrated verticals and new adjacent opportunities, including urban mobility, government collections, and services. This role requires a jack of all trades – someone who can flex from strategy to execution. The successful candidate will be a visionary capable of seeing around corners, anticipating trends, and identifying the “next big thing” in public sector. They will be willing to place big bets, and will have the fortitude and perseverance to drive those big bets to fruition. They will be excited by the opportunity to do the new, the different, the “first-of-its-kind” and will have the ability to convene and mobilize cross-functional stakeholders up, down, and across the organization to get it done. Prior experience at the intersection of public sector and acceptance / acquiring spaces encouraged.
Role:
• Lead and grow the Emerging Verticals business within the U.S. Public Sector team.
• Develop and shape strategy (including identifying new opportunities, accelerating growth in existing priority areas, managing pipeline, cultivating new relationships, elevating Mastercard brand and visibility, etc.) to further accelerate market expansion within Urban Mobility, Nonprofits, & Government Collections.
• Build business cases, develop go-to-market, secure cross-functional buy-in (e.g. account teams, product, finance, legal), drive execution, and manage executive communication around strategic initiatives.
• Directly manage senior customer relationships and strategic accounts; lead a high-performing team of relationship managers.
• Accountable for prospecting, cultivating, and closing opportunities, including successfully navigating contracts through rigorous legal and financial review processes. Collaborate across Acquiring, Issuing, and Merchant sales teams to drive cross-functional wins.
• Partner with regional product teams to establish Public Sector specific value propositions, pricing, and desired features needed to win.
• Builds relationships and establishes trust with customers across the organization. Able to navigate up to C-Suite and embed yourself as a trusted partner.
• Be a thought leader and subject matter expert for both Mastercard and our customers. Will be required to speak at conferences from time-to-time.
All About You:
• Ability to flex from strategy to execution, with intellectual curiosity and industry knowledge to skate to where the puck is moving, not where it’s been.
• Entrepreneurial spirit. Growth mindset. Relentless ability to preserve; can-do spirit and positive attitude a must.
• Strong commercial acumen with creative problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to develop strategic plans and build data-driven business cases.
• Proven strength in navigating complex organizational matrix, capable of building cross-functional buy-in. Ability to influence and motivate others to achieve objectives.
• Strong executive presence with sound judgement under pressure and in high visibility / rapidly evolving environments.
• Passion to provide products and services that support Government and Nonprofit sectors.
• Strong people leader with the ability to build highly motivated and successful teams.
• Acts with a sense of urgency and strong track record on delivering results.
• Strong understanding of the four-party payment model. Acquiring experience is a plus.
• History of holding sales targets, building pipeline, and winning new customers. Strong sales acumen, quantitative rigor, and negotiation skills needed.
• Ability to quickly learn offerings outside of own historical exposure / domain across issuing, acquiring, and services businesses.
• Strong analytical skills and experience managing P&Ls to successful outcomes including navigating market and regulatory dynamics.
• Strong written, presentation and verbal communications skills.
