Life beyond the Big Four: 7 NYC tech companies hiring in accounting and finance

Tech companies are just like any other company — they need someone to count the money. That’s great news for many New Yorkers tired of the corporate slog. Don't get me wrong, working at one of the Big Four is a rite of passage, but it's nowhere near as exciting as working in the tech and startup world.

If you're looking for a change, here are 7 NYC tech companies looking to fill accounting and finance positions.

Staff Accountant at Sisense

What they do: Sisense makes business intelligence software that lets users prepare, analyze and visualize big data.

Who they’re looking for: Someone with at least 2 years of Big Four experience who can work independently. Bonus points if you’re a CPA.

Why you want to work there: Sisense is growing quickly, but actively trying to hold onto that startup-vibe that made them so successful. That means you'll end up with the best of both worlds — a fast growing, stable company, and a fun, startup atmosphere.

Finance Manager at Compass

What they do: Compass is using technology to build a smarter and simpler real estate market.

Who they’re looking for: Someone with at least 5 years of experience in an accounting-adjacent function to help manage their Agent Finance team.

Why you want to work there: In addition to things like good health insurance and gym and tuition reimbursement plans, you’ll be part of a fast growing team taking on a huge industry. Plus, they have a super sexy office

Just so you know: Compass is actually looking to fill several finance and accounting positions in New York.

Staff Accountant at Yext

What they do: Yext makes software that lets companies of all sizes use location-based technologies to improve their online presences.

Who they’re looking for: They're looking for someone with two years of experience and a degree in Accounting to take on a hybrid, hands-on accounting and operational role. You’ll be assisting in day-to-day transaction processing and related tasks, while also performing financial analysis when needed.

Why you want to work there: Yext has some sweet perks. There's a flexible vacation policy, a gym membership reimbursement program, a fully stocked kitchen and a whole lot of other stuff

Accounting Manager at CommonBond

What they do: CommonBond is fixing the student loan industry. That means offering students lower interest rates, better customer service and a modern technology platform.

Who they’re looking for: Someone with experience at one of the Big Four that will focus on accounting, control and risk functions and to help define accounting policies.

Why you want to work there: You’ll be helping free millions of ambitious and smart young people from the chains of the student loan industry. Who knows what they'll create without spending all their time battling crippling interest rates? CommonBond also has a really cool policy where they give every employee with student debt $1,200 a year until it’s paid off.

Financial Controller at SeedInvest

What they do: SeedInvest connects investors with startups — but unlike other crowdfunding platforms, investors receive equity.

Who they’re looking for: Someone with at least 4 years of experience as a corporate accountant or in a finance/budgeting role at a tech startup to run their Finance and Accounting team.

Why you want to work there: SeedInvest is a well funded, Series B company with a lean team. They're going somewhere and now is the time to get onboard and grow with them.

Accounts Payable Manager at Fareportal

What they do: Fareportal runs an entire portfolio of travel tech brands — including their flagship, CheapOair.

Who they’re looking for: Someone with five years of experience and a BA in Accounting or Finance to be responsible for reviewing and adding invoices, reconciling credit transactions and performing month end accruals.

Why you want to work there: Fareportal's been around for awhile — like way back in 2002 — but the company has managed to maintain its focus as an innovative tech company. They also have offices around the world, and who knows, maybe there'll be an accounting emergency that requires you to check out their London or Las Vegas offices.

Staff Accountant at Rent The Runway

What they do: Fashion is art, but it’s also all about the dollars. Rent the Runway is reinventing the way the fashion industry does business by introducing a subscriptions to fashion model.

Who they’re looking for: They’re looking for someone to work in their Finance Department doing journal entries, accruals and reconciliations of balance sheets and income statement accounts.

Why you want to work there: Let's put it this way — when you're at a party, and people ask what you do for a living, you could say you're an associate at Ernst & Young, or you could say you work for a tech startup in the fashion industry. Besides, I bet your coworkers at Rent the Runway throw way better parties than your buddies at Ernst & Young anyway.
